Somerset (Ky.) April 12. John
and Henry Hill and Mary Smith
were arrested yesterday for the mur
der of two robbers who mysteriously
disappeared a few days ago. The
Smith woman tells the following
stery: "I was staying with Henry
Hill when two peddlers eamo to the
house and wanted to stay all night.
They were shown a room up stairs.
John Hill then came over and he
and Henry began to concoct a plan
to murder them. They told mo to
get a quilt and follow them. We
went up stairs and they compelled
nie to throw the quilt over the heads
of the sleeping men, then Henry
gave me u knife and told me to cut
their throats or they would kill me.
I did so and caught the blood in a
dish pan and threw It in the road.
The bodies were then thrown to the
hogs who devoured them. The men
had about $200 on their persons.

San Francisco, April 12.
Shortly after two o'clock this morn
ing a tire destroyed three tenements
on Jessie street between 3rd and 4th.
By strenuous exertions the Hames
were prevented from spreading to
large manufacturing establish
ments in the neighborhood. Mary
Mulligan, aged 70 one of the tenants
cannot le found aud it is feared she
has perished.

patch from Jordan states that prop
erty valued at $80,000 was swept
away last evening by Hoods. The
damage to the Minneapolis and St.
Louis road will amount to $75,000.
Portland, April 11. The repub
lican state convention assembled in
the Masonic temple hr this city at
11 a. in., and was called to order by
Hon. Joseph Simon, chairman of
the state central committee.
The organization was perfected by
tho election of Geo. H. "Williams, or
Portland, as temporary chairman.
On assuming the position Mr. Wil
liams, in his usual eloquent style,
presented the position of the repub
lican party, showing a very hopeful
situation. He knew that Oregon
was a republican state, and was
fully persuaded that not a solitary
republican could bo induced to
desert his post, and help an admin
istration that was endangering the
best interests of tho country and tho
principles that they had so faithfully
battled for. While making no ob
jection to proper work on the tem
perance question, but believing in
its earnest prosecution, ho deprecat
ed the action ol'tho prohibition party
in their evident intention to bend
every etl'ort toward defeating the
republican party. He wa-. pleaded
to observe tho perfect harmony that
prevailed, and tho evident intention
of every republican of sticking by
and working for the nominees of the
convention.
On motion John H. Sluipe, of
Douglas county, was elected tem
porary secretary and O. P. Miller, of
Clackamas county, assistant secre
tary. On motion C. E. Moore, of JJen
ton, Geo. II. Jlurnett, of Marlon, S.
W. Ulaisdell, of Umatilla, J. J.
Spencer, of Yamhill, L. N. Jtoncy,
of Lane, were appointed acoinmittee
on credentials.

A motion was adopted to the ef
fect that all resolutions should be

committee time to report.

gressman by acclamation amid
enthusiasm.
For supreme judge tho llrst ballot
stood, W. P. Lord, 104; Webster,
15; Whalley, 28; Lord being declared
the nominee.
C. W. Fulton, of Astoria, was
nominated as presidential elector on
tho tlrst iMillot.
The committee of platform aro
still at work on that document.
The district nominees were chosen
by the several districts which will
be ra titled by the convention to
night. For prosecuting attorney
of the third district H. H. Hewitt, of
Albany was nominated.
Hon. iluftiH Mallory, chairman of
tho committee on platform aud reso
lutions, then presented the report
of the committee and asked that tho
clerk be allowed to read it. Tho
platform was then read by Mr. J. IJ.
Eddy, who was frequently Inter
rupted by bursts of applause.
Thanks were voted to the olllcers
of the convention, and at 12:40 A. at.
tho convention adjourned; sine die.

of the Broadway Billhead Company,
is next to lie tried in connection
with the franchise bribery of Jacob'
Sharp. Notice has been served on
Kerr's bondsmen to produce him in
court to-day for the purpose of set
ting the ease for trial. This will bo
of interest to James A. Bichmond,
who is indicted with Kerr. Both
are badly frightened, each striving
to secure the other's trial beforo his
own. Joseph M. Korshay and
Sharp have died under indictment
and Kerr, some months ago was
thrown from a carriage and was in
a critical condition, but is now said
to have recovered entirely. Kerr is
under $40,000 bonds, aud a good
many think that he will stand n
trial.

men's republican league by the
election of Senator Allen as chair
