Tried to Kill His Sister's Alleged Per
secutor. SSan Francisco, March 2. Dr
James McShafter, .son of Judge
James McShafter. married Miss A.
Lange, in Germany seven years
since, against the' desires of his
father. The Judge's family then op
poesed the entree of tho son's wife
into their family and social circle
without avail. In tho latter part of
last year Dr. McShafter, presumably
under paternal pressure, commenced
a suit of divorce upon the grounds
that his wife was not true to her
marital vows. Carl Lange, a sailor
brother of tho persecuted woman,
came to this city to champion his
sister's cause. Divining that tho
elder McShafter was at tho bottom
of tho divorce proceedings, ho sought
to stop them by threatening tho
magistrate's life. Notbelngsucccss-
ful in his threats, ho to-day attempt
ed McShaftcr's life by tiring two
shots at him in tho crowded now
city hall. Neither shot took effect,
and Lang now finds himself In the
tanks, 'charged with assault to
murder.

tragedy occurred ut Rome, this
State, yesterday. Arthur Doveu
port, a teacher of tho public schools
at Rome, expelled one or two pupils
recently. Friends of tho teacher on
one hand, and those of tho expelled
pupils on the other, met at the
school house. A row ensued, and
James Bailey, Jr., fired six charges
from his pistol, instantly killing It.
A. Rutlege, and fatally wounding
his son Edward. Benjamin Fish and
Bailey's son received slight wounds,
Bailey wns shot Inside and received
a cut In the back.

The tariff bill submitted by the
ways and means committee of the
house proposes to fix the duty on
pig iron at $0 per ton. The duty on
this is now $0.72 per ton.
It prop6ses to fix tho duty on iron
ore and steel railway bars weighing
more then twenty fivo pounds to
the yard and slabs of billets of steel,
at $11 per ton.
On iron ore and steel rails weigh
ing not more than twenty-five
pounds to the yard, $14 per ton.
On iron ore and steel fiat mils
punched, $15 per ton.
WOOL DUTY FRIX.
The bill provides for the admit
ting, duty free, after July 1st, of all
weols, hair of goats and other liko
anlmals, wools on the skin, woolen
rags, hoddy mingo, waste and
flock.
MANUKACTUHIiD WOOLKNS.
After October 1st, 1888, it provides,
among other tilings, for a 40-percent,
duty on woolen and worsted
cloth, shawls, and all manufactures
of wool not specifically enumerated,,
and on flanuels, blankets, knit goods,
and women's and children's dress
gqpds composed in part of wool.
Thlais a reduction on manufactured
articles. Tho duty now on all
manufactured woolen not otherwise
specified is -08.52 per cent (ad
valorem), and on women's and
children's clothing composed hv
whole or in part of wool, 72.09 por
cent.; on blankets tho jircsont duty

tho Vice-Presidency. Ho answered
that he considered that the
wishes of Indiana should
be first regarded in the matter.
If that state presents an acceptable
candidate in an earnest way, its
wishes should not bo disregarded.
If tho positiongocs to some man out
side of that stMe, Mr. Morrison says
that he may be considered in the
race in the fullest sense of tho term.
It is an open secret that Mr. Mor
rison Is tired of his present placek
and he is not at all ambitious to go
back to congress, His friends are
confident that Cleveland will be
well satisfied with him as a running
mate.
