Bright fellow, too, in a general way. Please give me the opportunity ' to tell him wherein I tbink he is wrong not for voting tjpiust it, "for. that is his great privj ege- but for the reasons he gave in this " nun-sing's Statesman. "He fears it ' will stir op anl keep alive neighborhood jealousies, and thus become a nuisance and drawback to a growing eomniun ity." ';"'. Y : :'-v ; '?( "PttwMtk to a growing common; itv," iorsoothj Let us have done witK ibis forever putting temporal prosper ity and growth of a community above hi moral, intellectual and spiritual welfare. Jt's a : fallacy, anyway. I venture-the assertion that if be has a family to bring tap, and lived - in an Foster n ntate intending to move to the. West, he would, all other things being equal, select that state for his home where a local option law prevailed. Let us bid-for that element in the great tim eof immigration that is getting to ward the West that .prefers sobriety and purity in.the home, ineorruption in the eivie life, and intellectual advance ment fr all; and let other states bid f&rjthe intemperate, the vieiousand Jbe jjetrrirh-quiek class. Aj;ain he says: "The people- of Ore gon need to live in peace. There is enough of hatred now." Who is it that i xoing to kirk up a row and disturb tie peace should the law be enacted? Not tbe p-a-c-lovinj? and law abiding neoulo who vote .for it, -but the law- breaking, peace-disturbing saloon ele ment. It was t'hrist who said: "l came sot to send peace, but a sword," and it was in reference to just sueh issues as this. The advice he gives to sacrifice temperance and morality for neighbor hood peace and temporal prosperity for that is exactly what it amonnts to is bad, utterly bad. : Are we to truculently surrender be fore the battle, for fear the saloon men and their allies will disturb the jeaee if defeated. In the name of God, man, don't yon know there is no peace and can be none, so long as the saloon exists in Oregon t Ask those broken hearted families in-Corvallis who mourn their recent dead through the influence of the saloons of that town if they fear local option will drive the gentle dove of peace from their windows! The vote of an outside precinct should not be permitted to force Prohi bition on Salem, is another one of his Jtrguments. What is Salem, but the focal point of these same outside pre finetRt Is it a matter of indifference to the spokes of a wheel that the hub is 'rotten! Let me tell you very plainly, Nr. Bits for. Breakfast-man that Salem woold be small potatoes were it not for the constant presence on her streets of the rural population of Polk and. Ma rion counties. We come to yonr town with pockets overflowing with the wealth resulting from our industry, and yon welcome u with open arms. But when we claim that we have a right to destroy tlfe infernal traps you have set to catch us and rob os of our intellects and money, and to debauch us and our sons, you tell us it is none of our busi ness; that our right is limited to pre venting the setting of such traps in our own door-yards.' Do yon not realize that the man who sells his crop in Sji b'fri. spends his money in Salem, does all hi business in Salem, schools his ehiMren in Salem ami gets his news through the Salem Statesman, is as lunch interested as yourself in its in stitutions! It's only an imaginary line that divides t;s. '- I shall vote for local option, because, if passed, it will give every individual in trc$on a chance to votefor or against Prohibition in that locality. Kvery one should have the privilege of expressing his choice, and the majority Mionld decide. I am not saying that I shall then vote fox Prohibition in my county or precinct. That matter is not yet up for discussion. But ! am asking for the privilege of expjrTfcjg myself on the. question when it mme up. It seems to me no one should vote against my having- this privilege. Even the Bits for Breakfast iran, when he thinks it over, will, I trust,-5iowietge tne reasonableness of thi . fast his vote in favor of local optiJiUj, ""feb he vote steadily thereafter agaiaWWcal Prohi bition. That is a differ ent question. Bo t the trouble is that if this local option law is adopted the question of county and "preeine prohi bition will be up most of the time, and it will be a disturbing element.? It I is not the right way." And a person is not necessarily truculent if he desires J peace and grwxl feeling among neigh bors; if he desires to see as little quar reling as possible, and as much pulling together as may be. There -are plenty of honest people who do not believe ia prohibition; county or state, and who are not under the influence of "the Sa loons. Local option by precincts is a I xoidr. e nave tnac now. iiie law-o..: this point might be improved. But; local option by eounties would be a bad thing, and the opportunity ; to. vote on the question often, as provided in tne proposed law, woum atir up con tinual strife and would be a bad thing for Oregon. It saht not to be allow ed. Preeinct local option and high li cense in the towns are practical. There is. -a, -chance for wholesome legislation along these lines. ' But this chance wouM beT thrown awaj by. the adoption of the proposed loeal option law. The thing to do is to vote it down, and to go, to work along practical lines. . j j; SUNDAY- GAMES SALEM "WINS THE THIRD VICTOEY OVER ROSEBTJRQ T3X SERIES !.- or FOUR.
