A vote to change the July 5th meeting to July 12. A crab dinner was held for spouses and wives before the meeting. Initiation will be on July 12. HOME ECONOMISTS ANSWER QUESTIONS ON HOME CANNED FOODS Now that the last year's big canning season is over, you're enjoying the results of your ef forts; however, questions con cerning home canned food may arise in youi mind now or later The Hall Corporation home economists have assembled a few tips on why certain condi tions may exist in a jar of food you have home canned Of course, all homemakers should be familiar with the signs of food spoilage for the take of their families' health and safety. Spoiled food should never be served or eaten Check for lhese signs of spoilage each time you open a jar spurting liquid and gas bubbles, soft, mushy, slimy or moldy food, cloudy liquid; sediment in the liquid, leaking jars, bulging caps; and an un natural otfof. All low-acid foods should be boiled lor IS minutes before tasting. If lhe liquid foamt or the food has an un natural odor when heated, spoil age is indicated. Nothing can be done about it, and the fruit is fine to eat. These are calcium and oxalic acid, both found in spinach, which have combined to form harmless cal cium oxalate. Should any other questions come up on canned foods, call your local county home exten tion agent, or write the Hall Cor poration, Consumer Service Dept., Muncie, Indiana One method of controlling run-off is to apply extremely light applications at frequent intervals in order to take maximum advantage of sur face storage. This will work with center pivot and solid set systems since frequent irrigations with them do not increase labor much. Set systems such as side roll. hand-move, and side move are not adapted to frequent irrigations and must have their nozzel sizes correctly sized to the intake rate of soils to avoid run-off. In the case of center pivot, eliminating the big gun used to fill the corners may be adviseable. It usually doesn't do a very gixw! job of applying water anyway. Deep percolation. This type of water loss is caused by running the system too long and by extremely poor uniformity of water distri bution. If the system is being run too long, it should be shut off earlier. There were nine members present. President Amy Stradiey opened the meeting. Secretary-Treasurer Ruth Petterson not being present, minutes were taken by Nell Bowers. An interest ing gimmick used by the president for roll call, was a list of excuses given by members, "why they could- not attend the May meeting.” They created much laughter. The picnic was planned for July. Mrs. McGowan served a very nice lunch. Visitors at the Clyde Bowers home, Sunday eve ning were Howard and Marcella Sparks. George Moeller was a guest at the Otis Bullard home for supper on Saturday evening. On May 26, a baby girl was born to Mr. and Mrs. Mike Williams at Immanuel Hos pital in Portland. The little lass weighed 7 lb. 15 oz. and has been named Kimeko Ann Williams. Mrs. Williams is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ko Abe of the Arcadia community. The paternal grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Williams of Portland. Sorry to be so late with this but your reporter has just come home from a month’s vacation in Nebraska, visiting the old home town and many relatives along the way. Thanks to the co-operation effort of neighbors and friends and a good son and family, everything was fine, and the garden didn't even miss us. NU ACRES Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Evans spent four days st the Methodist Church Camp at McCall to prepare the camp for summer use. They left Wednesday and returned home Saturday. Susan Zeigler had a busy weekend. Friday night she stayed the night at Lenore Collins, Fruitlsnd. Sussn then returned home Saturday only to have another friend, Lori Glover of Fruitland, stay the night. Susan and Lori attended church Sunday morning. Fred Ross returned to Deerpark. Texas after spend ing a three-week vacation with his grandparents. Mr. and Mrs. Paul Russell. Attending the June 26 wedding of Wayne Traugh- ber and Connie Davidson at the Brethern Church in Fruitland, were Mr. and Mrs. Paul Russell, Cindy Russell, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Bivins, Marlene and Mike Bivins. Some of them provide only limited water savings, ac cording to Jim Burr, Malheur County Extension Agent There are. however, some practices that could save significant amounts of water for farmers using sprinkler irrigation systems. This year a water savings of 20 percent could mean the difference between raising a successful crop and having to cut back on acreage. Sprinkler systems can lose water between the water source and the sprinkler heads if the quick-couplers and fittings leak. The flexible gaskets that seal the coup lings often become hard and cracked after years of use and no longer seal They should be inspected and replaced if they have deteriorated. “At the same time, clean any sand and silt from between the gasket and the gasket seat to ensure a water tight seal,** Burr adds. Once the water reaches the sprinkler head, losses occur by evaporation, run-off and deep percolation. Evaporation losses. Both wind and high temperature affect the amount of water lost through evaporation, but wind has the greater in fluence. Water savings of H to 15 percent can be made by avoiding periods of high wind. Run-off losses. When wa ter is applied faster than it can be absorbed by the soil, it runs off. If not collected at a lower elevation and re-used it is lost to the farm.
