Malheur County dairymen are finding that cows do know the difference between qua lity hay and ordinary hay and it shows in the milk tank. Armed with results from a recent hay testing program. County Extension Agent Ray Novotny and Oregon State University Dairy Specialist H.P. Adams, sat down with growers and evaluated feed ing programs in light of the quality of feed being fed. In many cases dairymen found that rations short of supplying adequate protein for top production. Testing showed that protein levels in the hay were lower than producers assumed them to be in some cases. Where hay protein was low dairymen were advised to - and seve ral did • supplement with grain or a high protein concentrate. Results in some instances were striking as pounds of milk produced moved up in response to a better balanced ration. Some producers reported gains of 1 to 7 pounds of milk per cow per day in a matter of a few days. If there is a moral to this story for dairymen it is in two parts: (I) Have your hay and silage analyzed for protein so you know what you're feed ing and (2) And. maybe more important - concentrate on producing top quality, high protein hay for your heard as a major step in achieving profitable production and holding feed costs down.
