We regret this error and hope we haven't damaged anyone's image.. 10 YEARS AGO Taking over duties of city councilmen next Monday during Student Government Day will be Nyssa High School seniors Teresa El- guezabel, Janet Nedry, Marie Elguezabel, Mary Danford, Dick Finger, Seven Nyssa High School FFA youths plan to parti cipate in a state soil judging contest to be held in Elsie, Oregon. The youths are Craig Robbins, Dick Cooper. Danny Hiatt, Rick Phillips, Colby Strom. Alan and Don Cleaver. A bronze star medal for meritorious service while on duty in Vietnam was awarded to Lt. Col. Ralph Maze, deputy inspector general at Fort Carson. Colorado Brig. Gen. Charles Horner, Jr. acting commander of the Fifth Infantry (Meeh) Divi sion and Fort Carson, pre sented the award. The honoree is the son of Mr. and Mrs W F Maze of Nyssa. 20 YEARS AGO ■ Phyllis Cheldelin, dauj.h ter of Mr. and Mrs. O.E. Cheldelin of Nyssa, a junior at Oregon State College in Corvallis, has been named one of 51 junior students to receive a junior award for outstanding scholastic achievement. Miss Cheldelin. a 1954 graduate of Nyssa High School, is majoring in ele mentary education. The wettest October in history has slowed area-wide sugar beet harvesting and limited the harvest to 43 per cent of normal. Jed Lewis, district manager of Amal gamated Sugar Co. said Wednesday. Eleven different days of rainfall during the month brought the total of 3.12 inches at Nyssa while the Nampa factory recorded 1.97 inches. Monday it was possible to dig a small part of (he crop, but only 40 per cent of the normal amount for that day was delivered at Nyssa. Fields were so wet Tues day and on into Wednesday, dumps were not receiving any beets. October 18 - We met at the home of Mrs. Elvin Ballou. Wc had our business meeting. Sharon Dail showed us how to make carmel apples. Wc each dipped our own. While they cooled, we looked at some crocheting stitches. We ate the apples and went home. Joy Ballou, reporter. On Monday. October 25, the G-G 4-H Club met at the home of Mrs. Jane Ballou. Kaylene Robbins showed us how to make rossettes. We 30 YEARS AGO Mr. and Mrs. Ted Berreth announced that they have opened the Nyssa Auto Parts store in the former Abbott building at First and Main Streets. Hugh Smith i» the man ager, with Harry Erlebach as assistant. U.K. Loewen of Nyssa was the contractor in charge of the remodeling. They are Austin Montague, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. Earl Montague, and Jay Bunn, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Bunn, who were in Japan; and Melvin Feik. son of Mr. and Mrs. Parley Feik. who was in the U.S. Marines. 40 YEARS AGO Roosevelt was re-elected in Tuesday's balloting by an all time high fot electoral minorities. Only two states. Maine and Vermont, with a total of eight electoriai votes went to Landon and Knox while Roosevelt and Garner collected 523 votes. The new deal, popular plurality will reach around 9,000.000 as the final returns drift in. In Oregon Roosevelt re ceived approximately a two to one majority. gathering 154.ONO votes to 76.623 for Landon out of 1225 precincts reported. In Malheur County Roosevelt received slightly more than twice the popular vote. A royal welcome ■waited Dr. J.J. Sarazin Wednesday evening after a trip to Michigan. Several of the leading citizens were tlKre, with the fire truck standing ready, as Frank Edwards presented the doctor with a huge bouquet of ripe sun flowers. the group escorted Nyssa's leading Republican to a choice buggy. The trip through town created a huge wave of excitement, Seated in the place of honor was Doctor Sayazin, holding the faded sunflowers in a tight grip and smiling a typical Roosevelt smile. '' e. Wc cannot say the doctor was exactly surprised at the unusual welcoming commit tee. A telegram sent (collect) earlier in the day had forewarned him that things were not at all settled and that hi. presence was needed in Nyssa. The first words of the telegram must have warned him that things were very oad when he read: "Hurry back, country gone to h—”, Frank Morgan. ’.'Meet you at the train with ambulance" Jess Thompson. These and similar condol ences, signed by several dozen Nyssa people, caused Doc to pungle up a perfectly gotxi five dollar bill to see what the mysterious collect telegram might contain.
