Ptiyscans & Surgeons A MARKET PLACE FOR QUALITY - QUICK SERVICE - SATISFACTION Dr. Arthur S. Dole, M.D. To understand proper irri gation one must look first at the soil as a reservoir for the storage of water which plants may extract as needed and then to the factors which determine how the available moisture is eitracted from the st I reservoir Moe. of our soils are in the medium texture range and will store about two inches of available water per foot of depth. Soils on the sandy side will store less and those heavy to clay will store more. For our purposes let's as sume a medium textured soil with two inches of water storing capacity per foot of depth. There are two factors which determine the rate at which this stored water is removed. The first is the energy from the sun which ■warms the soil and evapo rates the moisture. The second is the plant which transpires water In the process of growth. This combined evaporation and transpiration will be about .20 to .25 inches mois ture per day under average summer conditions. We can assume that a healthy grass plant will extract moisture from the first foot of soil. With two Inches of moisture stored in this first foot, about 50% of which can be used before the plant shows signs of stress, we have one inch of water available to keep the plant in good condition. This amounts to about 4 or 5 days supply at an evaporation • transpira tion use rate of .20 - .25 Inches per day. Cooler weather will mean less use and hotter weather more but an every 4 or 5 day scheduling should keep most i lawns in good shape if the soil water supply is com pletely replenished with each irrigation. Thin spots or heavy thatch areas may need to be touched up between irrigations. A question often raised is how long to let the sprinkler run in one place to get a good soaking. This of course depends upon the sprinkler and water pressure An easy method for determining how much water is being applied and also how uniformly the sprinkler is applying it is to place 4 or 5 small cans equally spaced in a line under the sprinkler beginning two feet out from the head and extending to the outer edge of the pattern. Measure the water caught in each can in one hour. This procedure will tell you how much to overlap sprink ler settings and how long to set in one place to get the desired one inch application. A small probe pushed into the ground will help you tell how deep your irrigation water is penetrating. Where thatch interferes with water getting into the soil and contributes to a shallow weak root system, the best solution is to de-thatch with a power rake or similar machine. Other wise frequent irrigation will be required to maintain growth. As a general rule, less frequent, deeper irrigation tends to develop a plant root system that can feed deeper and thus compensate some for an extra hot day or a missed watering. The shal low root system often encou raged by light, frequent irri gation does not have this compensating ability. Urological Surgery Diseases of the kidney, bladder and prostate.
