Thursday, May 20, 1976 Nyssa Gate City Journal, Nyssa, Oregon Page Twenty One Nyssa PTSA Elects Officers, Hold Last Meet of Year SHELLEY MYRICK, center, was selected as one of the three Oregon students to attend the National Science and Humanitarian Symposium in Washington. D. C. She gave a talk and slides on her project at the PTSA meeting Thursday evening. The last Nyssa PTSA meeting of the 1975-76 year was held in the Primary multi-purpose room last Thursday, May 13. The evening began with a potluck dinner at 7:30. followed by the business meeting at 8:30. The Rev. William Russell of the Nazarene Church offered the invocation and the NHS flag and rifle corps presented the flag. Those girls participating were Joyce and Barbara Haney. Becky Mathews and Julie Gamer. Kelley Williams played the drum cadence and NHS Student Body President, Terry Fife, led the flag salute. He also served as Mary Omberg, left, was selected as Master of Ceremonies during Oregon Biology teacher of the year and was the program. Mervil Hut given a $1.100 microscope Carol Lawrence, chinson. treasurers gave the right, new PTSA president holds the awards financial report and Jeanette won by the Nyssa chapter from the state Garner, president, gave a report on the PTSA activi association ties for the year. Dan Martin, Junior High principal, reported on the proposed school budget and answered questions from the floor. Mr. Martin stated that more public hearings will be held in the near future and urged us all to attend and become more fully aware of the needs of the schools. Colleen Froerer, chairman of the nominating com mittee, introduced the no- minces for the offices, and they were duly elected, The new officers are Carol U- wrence, president; Camie Wagstaff, vice-president; Kerri Pettersen, secretary; John Messick, treasurer; Shirley Wells, Nyssa repre sentative; Ronda Bybee, Arcadia representive; and Jean Thompson, Oregon Trail representative. Carol Lawrence gave a short report on the OCPT convention held in Portland in April, and presented some special awards that our local PTSA earned this past year. The awards were for holding an annual Pre-school Round up for the new first graders, for increasing our member ship by at least 10%. and a special award for our Teacher Appreciation dinners. There are 136 members this year, of which 29 are teachers. 102 are parents. 3 are students and 2 are "others”. Those performing on the program were Valerie Mes sick who sang and accom panied herself on the guitar, Kelley Williams, who played a piano solo and the Happy Hirtfidtíy May 20 - Alan Peterson. Twenty-six mem bers and five guests saluted the American Rag. The minutes were read and approved, with the trea surer's report being posted as Hazel Smith, treasurer, is recovering from a severely sprained ankle. Named to the rummage committee was Harriet War ren. Anna Marostica. Alma Topliff. Inga Buckley and Merle Johnson. The rum- mage sale opened for busi ness May 14-15 at the Topliff home and will be open every Friday and Saturday through out the summer. Sue Kaatz. area planner, spoke to the assembled group about problems of the aging. May Bretz is this area's outreach worker for the aging. The secretary read a letter from Governor Straub on aging. The Rev. Worrall reported that the housing project is still in process and will soon be ready to set up for bids. The nurse was present to take blood pressures. The bus will be leaving for Succor Creek Saturday. May 22 at 8 a.m. Each person should bring a sack lunch and be prepared to pay their own way. A discussion was held on whether to meet at the United Methodist Church social hall during the summer It was decided by a vote to do this, as it will be cooler and provide more room. This will become the meeting place effective June 9. Those attending arc asked to bring their own tableservice. The meeting was closed with prayer by Wvatt Smith, chaplain. Past presidents Lucille Myrick. Virginia Cleaver, Colleen Froerer, Glenda Bar nes and Ernestine Messick, Past President of Baker Oregon School were intro duced. Virginia Cleaver is currently serving a 2-year term as Reg. VIII vice president and she installed the new officers. Virginia also reported that the 1978 OCPT convention will be held in Ontario. Only one official function remains for the PTSA this year, and that is the Senior Reception immediately fol lowing graduation. Glenda Barnes and Barbara Gamer are co-chairmen. The meeting was adjour- ned at 10 p.m. ADRIAN • Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Schafer went to Weiser Sunday to celebrate her uncle Arthur Breshear's birthday. He was 91 years old. This was a family reunion held in the Breshear's home in Weiser. Mr. and Mrs. Carl Bege- man visited Mrs. Dale Witt Sunday afternoon. Mr. and Mrs. George DeHaven were Sunday din ner guests of their daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Danny Sker janec and sons of Ontario. Their two children who have chicken pox remained with their grandparents for a few days. Saturday. Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Schafer met Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Bowers in Nyssa and went to breakfast in Parma at the "Old Fort Boise Davs." Following the break fast they observed the queens contest. Miss Bar bara Bowers was chosen queen She is the grand daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Bowers and daughter of Don Bowers in Parma. Her sister Brenda was the queen for 1975. After watching the parade they had a covered dish lunch at the Donald Bowers home and observed a very interesting program after the lunch.
