One Year S 7.00 Two Years $13 00 Primary Election May 25 Tuesday we will go to the polls to select our candidates in the Primary Election. Of national importance is the Presidential primary, and after reading almost daily since the New Hampshire election about who's in the lead, and who wins what, we Oregonians will now have our chance to state a preference. Oregon Republicans will choose between President Gerald Ford and Ronald Reagan, and this race nationally has been close with Reagan a strong challenger. Democrats have ten choices on the ballot. Several have given up the race. Hubert Humphrey and Edward Kennedy profess not to be running, and the race seems to have narrowed to Jimmy Carter. Morris Udall, and late challengers Idaho Senator Frank Church and California Governor Edmund G. Brown. Jr., and the latter is a write-in candidate in Oregon. In Malheur County the spirited race between incumbent Judge Jeff Dorroh and District Attorney Frank Yraguen for Circuit Judge has overshadowed the other candidates races, and most positions are uncontested. Not to be overlooked is the three-way race for Justice of the Peace. Nyssa District. Incumbent Judge E. Otis Smith is opposed by Everett Ballou and Don Engstrom, with each of the candidates waging a low-key. gentlemanly campaign. The Circuit Judge race has been something different. The candidates themselves. Judge Dorroh and Frank Yraguen, have spoken on the issues and have campaigned vigorously, and fairly. Not so, in many cases, with some of their supporters. Bumper stickers have been torn off cars, signs burned in front yards, and behaviour more characteristic of adolescent hoodlums than responsible voters has been evidenced. We have never seen anything quite like it. If there is anything basic in our democratic system, it is the right to seek and campaign for public office, and to support the candidate of your choice. We have been aware of more than the usual bitterness and vindictiveness in this campaign, and that isn't in keeping with our traditional sense of fair play and fellowship predominant in Malheur County. When you read this issue of the Journal and other county newspapers, you will note that each of the ballots is printed and published in both English and Spanish. Malheur County is one of two or three in Oregon selected for this experiment, and we believe that it is both an unnecessary expense and an insult to our Mexican ancestry citizens. As you have already noticed, the Oregon Voters' Pamphlet is printed in both English and Spanish. County Clerk Bob Morcom said that only one Spanish ballot was requested in each of the TVCC elections, and there will probably be relatively few in the primary election Tuesday. You should of came to me face to face. I am writing this letter to explain my side you never gave me a chance. You must hate me or something. I do not hate you as I don't know you. You had me removed for these reasons. I made a remark as I never seen so many fixture cabinets tn one building in my career. The salesman was a good sales man. 1 never seen so many bricks in one place too. One thing about public buildings I don't like is that the public should state in writing that all materials should be American made. Then a few days later I heard that I flirted with the teachers. The Journal: We now have an oppor tunity to place a better man in the office of circuit court judge. For years we have looked for such a man to replace Judge Dorroh, and now we have found him. Frank Yraguen is that man. And we should not let this opportunity slide by unheeded. The ugly facts you have heard about the present judge in court are not idle, ill- founded rumors. Do you wish proof? Eye-witness accounts? Ask any of the persons who. as jurors in his court, have suffered humiliation and witnessed uncompromising severity at their expense. Ask any of the spectators as well as participants in the present judge's trials during the past many years. Frank Yraguen will change all that. Justice and firmness. Yes—but no abuse, no lack of sympathy, no name-calling. Frank Yraguen will bring you also much experience, great knowledge of the law. wisdom and total fair-play emanating from his good moral character. I personally feel that it is our long-overdue opportunity to place a better man into the office of circuit court judge. Opportunity? Our obligation, rather, as citizens of this district with the welfare of our people at heart. Frank Yraguen is our man. Please, we must not let this opportunity slip through our fingers. The box becomes, in time, a reminder of many blessings, and the coins become an outward physical expression of thanks giving for these Messings. All coins of individuals from parishes and missions of the Episcopal Church are united annually into one great offering. From this offering, grants go each year—both in the United States and overseas—for new projects and programs, capi tal needs for building and repair, development funds, and new forms of mission. The United Thank Offering is a very special program in the life of the Episcopal Church wherever the Church family may be.
