Brewer Completes
Beltone Training Program
Chris Brewer. 572 N.W
4th Street, Ontario, has
completed an intensive class­
room and on-the-job training
period, and now is devoting
full time to helping hard-of-
hearing persons in the Nyssa
area as a consultant for the
Beltone Hearing Aid Service.

The announcement was
made by John Pierson who as
the authorized dealer for
Beltone Electronics Corpora­
tion operates Beltone Hear­
ing Aid Service for Malheur
and Harney counties as well
as five other Southern Ore-
gon counties Chicago based

hearing aids and electronic
hearing test instruments.
During his training pro­
gram. Brewer was instructed
in the use of the latest
Beltone Audiometers and in
the proper fitting of Beltone
Hearing Aids.

tests his hay is employing a
valuable tool in his market
ing process. Likewise, the
dairyman or beef producer
who asks for a chemical
analysis as a back up for his
visual evaluation of hay being
offered to him is more apt to
get his money's worth than
the buyer who simply looks at
the crop.
Leafiness, color, weeds,
odor, all are quality indica­
tors. All are factors to
consider in buying hay. All
are subjective evaluations
and hard to attach a specific
value to. On the other hand
crude protein determined
chemically can be a specific
basis for computing value
For esample if alfalfa with
16*-'» crude protein is selling
for $70.00 per ton. 20% crude
protein alfalfa would be
worth $86 80 per ton and
barley as a protein source
would be worth $136.50 per

the effort to produce top
quality hay, testing can tell
him how well he's doing. For
the dairyman or beef pro­
ducer who wants his money's
worth, testing can help him
determine that he gets it.
Oregon State University
offers a forage testing service
at a nominal fee. Extension
Agents can help with samp­
ling technique for interested
growers.
It costs more to produce
top quality hay and growers
who make the effort are
entitled to their reward. The
evidence must be there and
here's where testing tells.
The Oregon hay growers
association puts out a regular
hay market report available
■either by phoning or subscri­
bing to their written report.
They also operate a hay
locator service for people who
wish to either buy or sell. A

to 567-5591 will get particu­
lars for those interested.

Gophers are a permanent
problem on our irrigated
lands. They are active now
and cause their major prob­
lems when irrigation starts.
Trapping is one method of
control, effective but slow.
The fastest and very effective
control method is poisoning,
using alkaloid strictnine and
carrot sticks, apple sections,
parsnip stick, or sweet potato
sticks. At the rate of 1 oz.
strictnine dusted on 16 quarts
of any one of these materials.
Another tempting bait for
gophers is I oz. alkaloid
strictnine dusted on 10 lbs.
alfalfa tips. This bait should
he placed in the main runway
of the gophers. There is sel­
dom if ever anv secondary
