Thursday, April 29, 1976 Nyssa Gate City Journal, Nyssa, Oregon THE PAST 10 YEARS AGO New officers for Malheur Memorial Hospital auxiliary were installed Monday after noon during a regular meet ing of the group Mrs. Jake Fischer served as installing officer and conducted the cerenionv for Mrs. Jessie Morgan who assumed duties as president; Mrs. Charles Michael, vice president; Mrs. Dick Forbess. secretary; and Mrs. Ralph Lawrence, trea surer. I he women also completed details for the annual dance recital set Friday evening by students of Betty Madge Wilson and sponsored by the auxiliary. ••• Nyssa School Superinten dent W. L. M<. Partland, along with Sujierintendent Ralph Jones of Grants Pass, will represent Oregon at the 20th annual conference of presidents ■ nd executive secretaries of the State Association of School Ad ministrators ii Chicano thia week. While in Chicago Mi Part land plans to visit with Clyde Swisher, who is at the University of Chicago on a John Hay fellowship, and will visit his daughter Barbara at Ann Arbor. Barbara will be graduated this weekend after a year of graduate work at the University of Michigan 20 YEARS AGO SO YEARS AGO The first meeting of Nyssa's newly appointed planning commission was held Wednesday evening, with the group organised to work with the city council in studying needs for the city. Jed Lewis was elected president; Bernard Eastman vice president, and R V. Wilson was appointed secre tary. Tenure of office was determined by drawing lots with Fred Bracken and Dale Bingman receiving four-year memberships. WYEARS AGO The first German prisoners of war to reach Nyssa this season for work on Malheur County farms arrived here Sunday and more were expected today, making a total of HIM) for this territory. Captain E. E. Ganh. who will be in charge of six prisoner of war camps, said 550 of the H00 will be billeted in the Nyssa camp and 250 in the Vale camp ata Hans arc nearly completed for the carnival and dance to be held in the Nyssa gymnasium Saturday night by the Nyssa Lions Club for the benefit of the Malheur Memorial Hospital. POST The final hearing on approval of the proceedings for the sale of surplus water from the Warm Springs irrigation district to the government was held before the supreme court at Salem on Tuesday. The handsome brick buil ding being erected by Wilson Brothers will be reads for occupancy by June I. When these enterprising and sue- cussful young businessmen open the doors of the building to the public they will not only carry groceries, but will have complete stocks of dry goods and furniture. Dick Tensen will erect a large building on Main Street, to be occupied by Henry Fields, who has had experience in the garage business in Nyssa. The Coxy Theatre is being remodeled and enlarged at considerable expense, and a stage constructed that will accommodate the best travel ing companies. WESTERN FAMILY CORN TOASTIES FRESH LEMONADE IB oz. boi YEARS AGO A lively competition among homeseekers is anticipated when the 107 farm units, containing in all 6.2119 irri gable acres, is opened on the Mitchell Butte Division of Ihe Owyhee project on May 16th. Twenty-seven farm units containing a total of 1,021 irrigable acres will be opened on Ihe Vale project May 15th. John C. Page, acting com missioner of Reclamation says the hundreds of inqui ries received concerning these lands indicated that all the farm units would be entered shortly after the opening Inquiries have been received from virtually every state. The opening of the Owyhee project is the largest single opening offered by the Bureau of Reclamation since 1927. A committee consisting of County Agent Ray Larson.
