But since we are now in the public relations state of change, it might be necessary to give some conversion statistics. Most adults will like to change their jjound weights into kilograms. It takes 2.2 pounds to equal a kg. So if you divide your weight by 2.2 you will have your metric weight. According to this formula. I weigh approxi mately 64 kgs. That sounds a lot better than 140 pounds. Now let's compare linear (distance) units. We know the millimeter is about the width of a pencil mark. It takes two and a half centi meters to equal an inch. And the meter is a little longer than a yard. It is 39.4 inches long. If you multiply that by a thousand you have a kilo meter. The km is shorter than the mile. It equals six-tenths of a mile. Dividing miles by .6 converts miles into kms. So the 48 miles distance between Nyssa and Boise becomes 80 kms. Contrary to what the Jan. 25th Grit (page 12) says, the By Adriana Kunkel metric unit for volume (the liter) is slightly larger than our quart. One liter (L) equal 1.06 quarts. Time units are the same in both systems. The units are seconds, minutes, hours, etc. Let's review our distance units by working with the ruler on this exercise. The ems and mms will be interchanged. Just remem ber that there are 10 mms in a cm. One-half of a cm can also be written as .5 cm and equals 5 mms. (1) Label the top of a sheet of paper N. the bottom S, the left side W and the right side E. (2) 7 ems down from the top on the W side of the page start drawing a continuous line: 3 ems E, II ems S, 35 mms E. 5.5 ems N, 5 ems E, 5.5 ems S, 35 mms E. 9.5 ems N. 15 mms E, 15 mms N, 7 mms W, 1 cm S, 9.5 ems W, 5.5 ems N. 25 mms W, 1 cm S. 12 mms E. 8 mms S, 5 ems W, and 25 mms S.
