Wintering Waterfowl Saturday, Feb. 15 GOODYEAR LINOLEUM TYPE HES Team SRV Champions 0 Numbers Up In Oregon Ducks and geese wintering in Oregon arc up sub stanlially from recent years, according to results ol the annual winter waterfowl sur vey conducted recently by stale and federal wildlife bio logists. Ihc nationwide survey was conducted during the second and third week in January and included all major water fowl areas in the United Stales Forty biologists from the Oregon Wildlife Coni mission and from the U S Fish and Wildlife Service participated in counting wa terfowl throughout Oregon Some 404.(MM) ducks were recorded this year, an in crease of nearly 54 percent from last year and up 12 percent over the average for the past five years. Geese were even more prevalent this year Double the number counted Iasi year- sonic 94,500— were observed, which is nearly 75 percent higher than the five year average For the past several years, eagles sighted on the walerfowl survey have also been tallied Biologists repor I' d W II.till r.lglcv .Hid I ' golden eagles for a total of 96 in all Last year 62 bald eagles and 69 golden eagles were recorded Wildlife Commission staff biologist Chet Kebbe points out. however, that this does not necessarily mean a declining eagle population Many of the eagles seen in Oregon during January are winter visitors from other areas and weather conditions can have a marked effect on eagle distribution during this jx- riod Kebbe also points out that wintering waterfowl figures for the slate arc not really significant until Ihc results from other western slates are tabulated to Again, weather conditions and food supply play an im|xirtant role in w here ducks and geese spend ihc winter NHS CALENDAR NYSSA 10.
