Thursday, December 20, 1973 The Nyssa Gate City Journal, Nyssa, Oregon 10 YEARS AGO Thu 88 students, their instructor, Frank Turner, and 10 chajierones are due to leave the Nyssa bus station on three chartered buses at 6 p.m following the rally. In speaking for band students, Turner has stated that they will do their best to perform in such a manner as to merit the support given by area residents. "»• • . a ' James E. Niccum, 17, son of C.C. Niccum of Nyssa, is completing his Air Force airmen indoctrination course at Lackland Air Force Base, San An tonio, Texas, according to the base public information office. • • • Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Kesler re ceived a phone call from their son, Clarence Ray, Jr., Monday from Osaka, Japan. Kesler on rest leave from Korea, called to wish his parents and his sisters and brother a MerryChrist- mas. 30 YEARS AGO The Nyssa Chamber of Commerce passed two resolutions pertaining to road matters at its weekly luncheon Wednesday noon. He is opposed to a soldier bonus, the president said flatly and without qualification. 60 YEARS AGO The Chinese pheasants which were introduced into this vicinity a few years ago by the Parma Gun club have spread until now the whole lower Boise Valley iscoveredby them. There is a persistent rumor, however, that these birds are being shot by some of the residents of this section. There is a strict law against this and vio lators are liable to severe punishment. In addition to its value as a game bird the pheasant is noted as a great friend of the farmer. About one- half pint of harmful insects and larvae was found in the stomach of a China pheasant recently killed for demon stration purposes in the Oregon Agri cultural College laboratories. At this rate the bird would have devoured one bushel of insects in 124 days or almost three bushels per year. TURKEYS... Crossing the highway to the school building is considered extremely hazardous because of (tie great amount of traffic along the highway and the distance the children are required to walk reaching a sidewalk. In the other resolution, the chamber asked that the State Highway Department improve the road from Adrian south to a junction with the I-O-N cut-off. The Highway Department is expected to resurface the Nyssa-Adrian section in the spring so that last week the Nyssa Chamber voted to ask the state to eliminate some of the dangerous curves before undertaking the resur facing project 20 YEARS AGO A giant rally is being planned as a send-off for Nyssa High School’s band immediately preceding its leaving for Pasadena and the Rose Bowl parade on New Year’s day. It will be held on the MAW parking lot at 4:30 p.m. Sunday, December 29. The event will be open to the general public and all band boosters and music lovers are urged to be there to show their appreciation for the achievements of this group of students. Remove at once from heat. Stir in rum and nutmeg. Chill until cus tard t*gms to thicken Meanwhile whip egg whites with remaining 1/4 cup sugar until stiff peaks form. W hip cream and fold intocustard. Fold in egg whites. Turn into Ctirx-olateCrumbShell.Chill. Whir preserves in electric blender until pureed and spoon into center of pie, spreading evenly Just before ser ving remove outer ring from pan. Pipe or spoon a border of whipped cream around top edge to garnish. Makes 8 servings. CHCXOLATE CRUMB SHELI, C ombine 1 1/3 cups crushed chocolate wafers (about 28 2 1/4-lnch) with 1/3 cup melted butter inS-lnchspringformpan*. Press against bottom and I 1/2- incites up sides of pan.
