Nyssa Bulldogs Prepare Vernon Lords, coach of the Nyssa junior varsity football team, stood to one side watch ing his players run through some passing drills, there is a lot of work in store for the junior Bulldogs before their opener against Vale at Vale this Thursday, September 13. "This is the first practice we’ve had," said Lori “With everybody we’re going to use.” Vale, said Lords, had a very tough eighth grade team last year and they will be playing as freshmen this year. Also, Lords added. Vale will have a “Big” team. "We’re really small," said Lords. “Really small." Greg Moffis, a freshman, will be the starting quarterback, according to Lords. “Moffis can throw the ball,” said Lords. “If we can hold the line and keep the front wall for him, he can throw the ball.” "We’ve got two kids that can catch it if he gets it near them. Larry Haney at split end and Clark Kido at slot- back." Danny Simantel,” said Lords “is looking really tough at cen ter. And a couple of freshmen, Gordo Grimaldo and Mike Ira- cheta, are looking tough as interior linemen.” "Also," said Lords “a good determined kid, both offensively and defensively, is Brad Hol comb. I just hope we don’t lose him to the varsity.” Lords said he would like to be going up against someone besides Vale for the first game, but the junior Bulldogs plan to be ready for Vale by this Thurs day. Parnell passed this and other suggestions in a memorandum to those who call the signals at the local level--school superinten dents and community college presidents. Admitting his advice may rub some fans--football, not elec- tnc--the wrong way, the state school chief said, “As a sym bolic action alone, schools must provide leadership if we are going to be serious about knock ing heads witn the energy crisis." Parnell, who coached high school football at Springfield and Salem Academy, asked, “How would you feel if the energy shortage had cost you a job, and you looked out your window one evening to see the lights at the football field burn ing brightly?" Any energy consumed on autumn evenings may be des perately needed tc warm school buildings when winter arrives,” he added. Parnell has asked Oregon’s 13 community colleges to serve as regional information and training centers for energy con servation. “For example, school dis tricts will soon be hearingfrom community colleges about local workshops for school and col lege maintenance people on ways to conserve electrical power and heating fuels.” Eagles Golf Event Planned The annual Eagles Autumn Chapman Scotch Ball Golf Tourn- ment will be played at Ontario Golf Course Saturday, Sep tember 22 at 3 p.m. Jim Kile is this year’s chair man, and he asks that all en- ties be matte by noon Fri day, September 21.
