Why do they merit »o much money? — Cave Junction ANSWER: The United Nations did not appropriate an extra $.5 million, but it did appropriate $688,000 to increase the ca pacity of Chinese language services. Chinese has been one of the Ove working languages in the United Nations since its inception in 1945, and Chinese delegates have always been en titled to simultaneous interpre tation of speeches and transla tion of documents. The Republic of China, however, did not press for extensive translations and often used English in meetings. When the Peoples' Republic of China was seated in the UN in 1971, it was clearly indicated that the Chinese delegation would no longer forego the full use of the Chinese lan guage.
