SWISHER Art & Photography Entries in the Art and Pho tography division at this year’s Malheur County Fair will be accepted on Tuesday, August 15 from 1:00 - 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, August 16 from 8:00 -10:00 a.m., according to Ann Kane, Nyssa, chairman of that department. This years art and photo graphy exhibits will be dis played in the commercial build ing in space donated by local merchants. Persons planning to compete in art and photography should read the fair book for complete exhibit details says Mrs. Kane. Both art and photography will be divided into Junior, Inter Log Cabin mediate, and Senior divisions. The Log Cabin at the Fair Senior division will include everyone 18 years oldandover, grounds will again be used as but will be divided into Begin ning and Advanced sections. Following are the lots in cluded in the Art Division: Photography 1. Best Mounted Camera Study, Animals; 2. Best Mounted Camera Study, People; 3. Best Mounted Camera Study, Scenery; 4. Comtemporary, Non-Ob- jective or Experimental Work in any medium; 6. Fine Arts Pottery; 7. Creative Textiles; 8. Best Exhibit of Waste Material Utilized in Art. 9. Best Collection of Art Objects or Paintings, Different Media, more than 3; 10. Professional (Exhibit Only).' FOOD ENTRIES Tall layer cakes, lucious pies and mouth watering breads will be displayed in the foods divi sion at the Malheur County Fair on August 16 - 19. Mrs. Lavona Porter, Payette, chairman of the Foods andCan- ning Department says exhibits will be housed in the red ex hibit hall this year. Entries may be made on Tuesday, August 15 from 1:00 -8:00 p.m. and on Wednesday, August 16, from 8;00 - 10:00 a.m. A Junior Division for young sters 14 years of age or youn ger will be included. Home canners should select their exhibit carefully since many special awards will be given to exhibitors in these divisions by Ball and Kerr Glass Companies. Details on food entries are I located on pages 52 - 57 of the I Malheur County Fair book. ■ Last week I mentioned specifically a novel by James Miche- ner; this week I should like to take another tried and true story teller and talk about his latest novel. The respected writer of popular fictionalized biography is Irving Stone. Many of you will recall Irving Stone’s earlier novels, THE AGONY AND THE ECSTASY, which dealt with the life and times of Miche langelo; and LUST FOR LIFE, which dealt with the adventures ■ of the artist VanGogh. This time Stone has chosen the life story of Freud and titled his book, THE PASSIONS OF THZ MIND. It is the story of an extraordinary man who is one of Vienna’s most distinguished neurologists--Sigmund Freud. He gave up a life of respectability and affluence to become a daring researcher of uncharted seas in an effort to change forever man’s understanding of himself, his motivations, and his world. He was a pioneer explorer of the dark and fearsome frontiers of the sexual nature of man. The loveliest corner at the Malheur County Fair, August 16 - 19 will be the flower and Garden Club division. Four gar den clubs, Owyhee, Vale, A.N.K., and Adrian will be pre paring garden club booths ac cording to Helen Conner, Malheur Extension Agent. Area residents are urged to bring their flower exhibits to the exhibit building on Wednes day, August 16 from 8:00- 10:00 a.m. Exhibitors should remember the judges consider the stems, foliage, and freshness of the flowers in judging. Flowers ex hibit best if picked late in the afternoon and placed in deep, room temperature water over night. Black containers will be fur nished for floral exhibits. Town and Country Garden Club from Nyssa will be in charge of registration of ex hibits. Entries in these divisions should be taken to the Log Cabin on Tuesday, August 15 from 1:00 - 8:00 p.m. and We- dnesday, August ¡6 from 8:00- 10:00 a.m. Oregon Traffic Deaths Highest In July Records Eighty-one people died in Oregon traffic during July. It was the worst toll recorded for that month in the state’s history, according to the Motor Vehicles Division, and pushed the state’s seven-month traffic toll to 423, compared with 362 for the same period a year ago. Despite the increase so far this year, the state still has a chance to at least reduce the rate of increase over last year if August traffic deaths can be kept at or below the five-year average of 65. Last year, August traffic crashes killed96 people, the worst monthly toll in the state’s history. “U individual Oregonians really want to do something to reduce traffic deaths,” an agency spokesman said, “the best thing they can do is make certain everyone is buckled up before the car starts moving.’’ stmn Super Redwood Saver!
