Adrian made a great showing against Burns with a score of Adrian 58 to Burns 59. Junior High members of the team also participated and did very well in all events as did the high school. The action gave the squad a 1-2 record prior to theWapatai loop opener this week at Ad rian against Pine-Eagle. Mike Condra and Dennis Beebe teamed up to do a five- hit mound job, with Condra allowing just one hit before gi ving way to Beebe in the sixth. Condra whiffed eight. The Antelopes had eight hits, all singles. Condra had two hits and four RBI’s to be big sticker. It’s the sage grouse booming and strutting season which peaks generally in early April. The big grouse gather first on the lower flats and then at higher elevations as the weather warms. Grouse gather on the same strutting grounds year after year. Located generally on broad, grassy flats, some strut ting grounds may cover a mile or more of area. The activity is a ceremonial mating ritual which begins shortly before daylight and ter minates after sun-up. Sage grouse from several miles in all directions come winging in each morning for the brief in terlude until the mating season is over. Game biologists visit the booming groundseach spring to make a census of the birds to determine grouse numbers going into the nesting season. Male grouse establish ter ritories and then attempt to attract females into their pro tective sphere by puffing out their chests, opening and clos ing their tail feathers, and emit ting booming calls made by throat pouches. Rival males fight viciously for mastery over a given area. Those which put up the stron gest showing in strutting and fighting become flock masters whose privilege it is to per petuate the species. Following the month-long breeding sea son, the birds disperse to set up housekeeping. Young sage grouse hatch any time from mid-May through June.
