History has recorded varied patterns for these times of rejoicing and celebration. Traditions, nationalities, economic factors, as well as re ligion and other influences, affect the way people celebrate the coming of the springtime, and Spring itself may bring to bear the most potent influence of all. Christianity has added another dimension to springtime festivals. No longer merely a time to celebrate nature’s re birth, and to enjoy the perennial optimism which calls a man to a fresh start, Easter opens a new arena of exploration and experience. In Christianity, the continuing question of the ages, “If a man die, shall he live again?”, finds its answer. The re corded teachings of Jesus clearly tell of eternal life and all its possibilities, as do the teachings of most religions. In clude with the teachings of Jesus the actual fulfilment, also recorded in the Bible and history, and Easter adds the di mension of resurrection life to all that had previously been celebrated in the springtime. Easter is robbed of its most valuable meanings if we pass through the season thinking only of nature with its fresh greenness and blossoms, only of eggs and their promise of life, only of new finery to mark the bursting forth of color and beauty. What lasting values are brought in the green and the blossom, the egg and the bunny, the new season of color and beauty? Add a little time and green becomes brown, blos som, leaf and even the fruit are gone, and where is the life and color and beauty that held such promise? The service will be an adap tation of the ancient Tenebrae Service. Tenebrae is the Latin word meaning “shadows". This will be a candlelight service with Communion following. Easter Sunday morning at 6 a.m., our Church hasbeenin- vited to the Park Community Church for the Sunrise Ser vices again this year. Break fast will be served followingthe Sunrise services there. Sunday School at 10 a.m. for all ages. Easter Church ser vices at 11 a.m. with an Eas ter message entitled, “The Of fense of the Cross". BIBLE MISSIONARY CHURCH A special Easter program is planned for Easter Sunday at the Bible Missionary Church lo cated at 728 N. 2 nd Street. Every child of the Sunday School will have a part. Also this year the young people will be sing ing several choir numbers. Mrs. Ralph Kellogg is in charge of the program and has worked very hard as have those who are participating. Bill Lewis as the host pastori Sponsored by the Nyssa Ministerial Association, the service gives the opportunity for combined worship at this significant season. Ken Wright will be the or ganist for the service, with special music to be presented by Janean Schoen and Harriet Lewis, accompanied by Mrs. Ron Schoen. Rev. Robert Simard, St. Brid get’s Catholic Church, will be speaking in the service, with other local pastors participat ing. “The offering received each year at the Good Friday ser vice is used through the Minis terial Association to assist needy persons in our area,” said Robert Manley, president. "People of the community are encouraged to share the uplift of this service as a part of their observance of Holy Week and the Easter season.”’ NAZARENE CHURCH Easter Sunday will start with the teens attending a Sunrise Service followed by breakfast together at the parsonage. This is an annual gathering for study and fellowship when all the pas tors from the American Lu theran Church’s North Pacific District (Alaska, Oregon, Wa shington, and most of Idaho come together. ♦ * ♦ The men and women of Faith have been working hard on re modeling projects in the last few weeks. The narthex was recently remodeled as a re sult of a memorial to Paul Baker. The Faith ALCW (women’s group) and individual members purchasedwall to wall carpeting for the narthex and stairway, which was installed this week. The men of the church have been busy putting in new wall panelling andpaintingwoodwork in the nave of the church. The project is nearly completed, and when completed the whole up stairs (main floor) of our buil ding will have been given a new and beautiful look. A potluck dinner for all mem bers of the church will follow the egg hunt. r Services for Arthur Elmer Sparks, 64, of 502 N. 4th, Nyssa, who died Thursday, March 23 of natural causes at Malheur Me morial Hospital, were conduc ted Monday, March 27 at the Lienkaemper Chapel, Nyssajby the Rev. J. D. Crego of thé United Methodist Church. Interment was at the NyKsa cemetery. Mr. Sparks was born Sep tember 19, 1907 at Woodward, Oklahoma. He came to Idaho in 1924. He married Erma Stock ham March 22, 1930 at Payette, Idaho. He was a rancher in the Dixie, Big Bend and Kingmart Kolony areas until his retire ment to Nyssa four years ago. The deceased was a member of the Adrian United Presby terian Church and had served on the board of trustees. He was a past member of the King- man Kolony and Oregon Trail Granges. He is survived by his wife, Erma of Nyssa; two sons, Guy Sparks, Nyssa and Richard Sparks, Idaho Falls; one daugh ter, Mrs. Kenneth (Shirley) Altig, Boise; his stepmother Mrs. Ellen Sparks, Boise; a brother, Earl Sparks, Portland; three sisters, Mrs. Clarence Mull of Boise, Mrs. Ronald Gridley of Boise and Mrs. La- werence Leggett, Castle Rock,’ Colorado; seven grandsons and two grand-daughters. He was preceded in death by his mother, father, twobrothers and a sister. Active pall bearers were Eve rett Pease, Lynn Hurst, Jack Elliott, Vernon Parker. Den wayne Bennett, George Cart wright.
