NYSSA CHRISTIAN CHURCH BURNS MORTGAGE AFTER MANY YEARS OF WORK By Arlene Robb Burning of the mortgage on the Christian Church, Sunday, February 6, was the culmina tion of a beginning that started over thirty years ago. A group of those interested in such a church met for some 22 Sundays under the leader ship of various ministers from the valley sponsored by the Layman’s League of Southwest Idaho. On October 6, 1940 the Con gregation was organized with 54 charter members. J. S. Beem of Ontario was the first minister, and the meetings were held iii the Old Legion Hall. This group incorporated on October 26, 1941 and bought the Nazarene building. It was moved to the present site of the Christian Church on lots donated by Mr. and Mrs. Lon Fry. Two years later the pre sent parsonage was purchased. During 1948 the church buil ding was sold to the Lutherans and moved to its’ present sight when the youngcongregation be gan building the present struc ture. The last two years have seen some real efforts made to meet this challenge, and over $16,0Q0 was raised by the congregation to make the burning ceremony for the mortgage possible. NAZARENE CHURCH NOTES Special guests in Sunday eve ning’s service will be Rev. and Mrs. Grady Cantrell of Nampa. Rev. Cantrell is dis trict superintendent of the Idaho- Oregon District of the Church of the Nazarene. He previous ly served as pastor of Boise’s First Church of the Nazarene. and has been the special speaker here in Nyssa for a series of special services a few years ago. He will be preaching in the service Sunday evening as well as sharing observations from the work of churches on this district. Mrs. Cantrell is president of the district’s missionary so ciety, working with local groups in missionary education, en listment and support. Mrs. Cantrell will present a vocal number as a part of the service next Sunday evening. ♦ ♦ ♦ Sunday school workers will be sharing the inspiration this week, Friday and Saturday, of an area convention being held in Caldwell at the First Baptist Church. The interdenomina tional convention is sponsored each yearby the Treasure Valley Sunday School Association. Rev. Orval Butcher, pastor of Sky line Wesleyan Church in Lemon Grove, California, will be speaking in each session, and there are age and interest group seminars scheduled for each of the four sessions. The con vention begins about 7:00 p.m. on Friday and will continue with three sessions on Satin day.
