SYKES, M.D. III i MIS Student Expresses Views MM > > Ml Professional Directory St. Paul’s The Rev. John K. Worrall, Vicar of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, and Mrs. Worrall, have just returned from a vacation trip through Southern and mid California. This trip took them through San Diego, LaJolla, Monterey Park, Hunt ington Beach , North Holly wood and Oakland. At Oakland the Rev. Worrall was acting rector for two weeks at St. James’ the Apostle Epis copal Church. This church dates its origin back to 1858 and is one of the oldest churches in the area. Constructed of redwood in the beautiful pioneer style, it was once a congregation of quite wealthy people who dwelt within the confines of the church vicinity, and many of the very large, so-called mansions, of these people still exist, some in good preservation and some deteriorated rather badly. The congregation, once to tally Caucasian, is now about 50% black, mostly young or middle aged, with the other 50% com' >sed of elderly Cauca sia . It is interesting to note, that with the great national and, at times, local emphasis < n integration, often a conser vation piece rather than fact, in this very agedchurch there is a true melting pot of at least two races of different origin, with a true line of communi cation and relation existing be tween all involved, where tin fact, rather than thewordof integration is the rule. The neighborhood, once a Physicians and Surgeons Dial 372-2241 Rector Returns “posh” one has deteriorated economically and many churches of different per suasions have folded their doors, but constant efforts on the part of the rector, the Rev. F.L. Lattimore, have made this congregation a live growing thing with an excellent out look for the future based on a mutual outlook of all peoples for the Word and Spirit of Je sus Christ. The Rev. Worrall served St. James asa seminarian, and then as an or<tiined minister for a brief period before coming to Eastern Oregon. Though embodying a great love for the people of the con gregation of this mid-California church, the Rev. Worrall is, nevertheless, most happy to be back in this area of Eastern Oregon, which he now considers his true home, to work for the spread of the Kingdom of God amongst us.
