Congressman Al Ullman testi fied Wednesday before the House Appropriations Sub-committee of the Interior requesting in creased federal funding for several major resource pro jects in eastern Oregon. Ullman asked the Sub-com mittee Chairman, Julia Hansen of Washington, and her col leagues to include $417,000 in the appropriations for fiscal 1972 to continue construction of the Warm Springs National Fish Hatchery on the Warm Springs Indian Reservation in central Oregon. Work began on the hatchery last year, but the administration included no funds for the project in its 1972 budget. Ullman also requested an ap propriation of nearly $700,000 to begin work on the proposed Lava Lands Recreational Area near Bend. This Forest Ser vice project was authorized three years ago, but no funds were requested by the admin istration for the new budget. Funds are needed to construct a visitor's information center for this important geological area. In addition, Ullman asked the sub-committee to increase funding to the Silviculture Laboratory at Bend and the La Grande Range and Wildlife Habitat Laboratory to expand staffing at these Forest Service centers. Teen Leaders Training Set Those boys and girls who would like to work with a group of small children may do so this summer on a voluntary basis. A Teen Leaders training session will be held Saturday afternoon, June 5. Holly John son, Malheur Extension Home Economist will conduct the training session. Miss Johnson stated that it will be up to the leader as to what will be taught, when the group will meet, how long it will last, and when the group will begin. Miss Johnson ad ded that the groups do not have to start at the beginning of the summer. 4-H material will be made available if the leader wishes to use it. Examples of the various types of projects which could be used are Outdoor Cooking, Entomo logy, Fishing and Sewing, just to name a few. The projects may be short term projects, such as a 2 week fishing trip. Miss Johnson suggested that the leader may even want to try something he knows very little about, and learn with the group. Those interested in becom ing a teen leader may sign up by contacting Holly Johnson or Ron Mobley at the Malheur County Extension Office, or by calling 889-9129.
