John McKean, state game di rector, said these hunters have already been selected through a random drawing of names from the total hunting license holders and each will soon be receiving through the mails a hunter ques tionnaire on which he is re quested to record his hunting success or failure last year. The annual survey is to deter mine how many big game ani mals, upland game birds, and waterfowl were taken by hun ters during the 1970 seasons. John McKean requested that recipients of the questionnaire answer all questions and record accurately success as well as failure during last year’s hunts. The questionnaire must then be returned to the Game Commis sion. Statisticians report that total kill figures obtained from the random sample of hunters -- about 7 percent of the total — are very accurate. For deer the accuracy is plus or minus 1 percent. The accuracy of the elk kill and that for water-- fowl and upland birds are also close to the 1 percent margin of error. The total kill figures for the 1970 seasons will be available in late February or earh March. Suffering their first defeat in four starts, the Nyssa Bull dogs lost to Wahtonka Friday night by a 58-51 score. Con tributing mostly to their down fall in the Greater Oregon League loss was Nyssa’s 19 fouls which the Eagles con- verted into 24 points, while being guilty of only 7 fouls. Dan Nichols, however, was the only Bulldog to foul out with 5 infractions. Greg Blanch was the game’s top scorer with 16 points. Other Nyssa scoring was Moffis 9, Chester and Trost 8, Manley 6, Martinez and Nichols 2. McNab and Herman led the Wahtonka effort with 13 each, Stranz and Markman 10, Pri- die 6, Griffin 4, Eulps 3. HOLSUM 4______ lb. BAG Republican members of the House of Representatives have adopted position papers calling for a freeze on property taxes for senior citizens and for a national Constitutional Conven tion to tackle the question of federal revenue sharing with the states. House Speaker Robert F. Smith, R-Burns, said Republi cans would introduce and sup port these measures in the 1971 Legislature. Smith said GOP House mem bers believe “that the first priority for property tax relief is the absolute need to provide meaningful relief for Oregon’s senior citizens. “Inflation steals from every one, young and old alike, but it hurts especially those elderly Oregonians who live on pensions or other fixed incomes. The great majority of our senior citizens constitute a strong and independent part of our society. They are people who desire only the opportunity to exercise their own individual initiative and abilities.” Smith said that the property tax relief program to be pur sued by House Republicans would not be limited to senior citizen relief. He has said, however, that property tax re lief must be achieved through existing revenues, and not de pendent upon a broad-based in crease in taxes. House Repub licans, Smith said, ”do not seek to make older Oregonians the recipients of perpetual charity, but rather to enable them to live healthv lives, in dignity, in independence ana in security.” The Republican position on revenue sharing cited the “hazards” involved in a Con stitutional Convention, but said that the action "is necessary to call to the attention at Con gress the absolute urgency of meaningful and substantial fed eral action.” The Republicans, Smith said, believe that any Convention should be limited specifically to ttv question of revenue sharmc.
