They spent a night in Nyssa last week on their way toWashington, D.C., by bicycle. What gets a 17-year old boy started on such a trip? It was Kim’s idea. He said that he was washing his dad’s car last November when he started thinking about different stories concerning bike trips. Having a sister in Washington, D.C., gave him a destination. The next step for Kim was to convince his parents that he was seriously interested in making such a trip. After Kim invited Pete to go along and they started making plans together, the Longfellows were convinced. The only special preparations the boys made were to pick out 10-speed bicycles, purchase the special camping and traveling gear, have AAA map a special route that avoided interstate highways in states forbidding slow vehicles, and make arran gements to leave their junior year in school two weeks early. As departure tim? drew near, Kim’s greatest worry was Pete’s slowness in obtaining a bicycle. About a week before they left, Pete finally got that job done. They liad traveled from 75 to 90 miles each day, leaving Seattle six days ago. The last stop before Nyssa was Baker. Trouble caught up with them just once. Spokes loosened and broke on Pete’s rear wheel east of Pendleton, and they had to hitch a ride in for repairs. The next stop after Nyssa is Boise. The evdeists found hospitality in Nyssa by stopping late last Thursday evening at the Twilight Cafe for a snack. Se veral individuals inquired about the trip. The waitress, Mrs. Pastor Arthur Coats Zella Lewman, paid for their food. took them home for the night. They had planned to camp at the site on the river bank. Pete and Kim hope to reach Washington, D.C., in another four or five weeks. They will have pedaled 3500-4000 miles. They are spending $3 to $4 per day, mostly for food though they have limited equipment for cooking their own meals. The return trip? Kim’s father is associated with a trans- continental van line that will freight the bike back. Pete isn’t sure yet how he will travel, but Kim plans to fly. Both boys seemed to be enjoying the adventure. It had not occured to them that they would attract any special attention, and they did not publicize the trip. But already they have been interviewed by newsmen in two cities before Nyssa and have had a state patrol car escort them into Pendleton with a siren and flashing lights.
