Bowlers of the week: Velma Stam, 495 scratch; Freda Hol comb, 613 handicap. o o The host Ore-Ida Judo Club was tournament winner of the 19th annual judo tournament held in Ontario Saturday, scor ing 110 points, one point more that the SpokaneClub who scored 109 for second place. There were 325 contestants from 21 clubs competing in the double elimination tournament. Clubs came from the states of Oregon, Idaho, Washington and Utah. Three Nyssa boys were among the prize winners. Eric Stunz won a medal for finishing in 3rd place in the 10 years and SUNSHINE 10/4 oz. Roosters Total Most Successful Season. 16—2 “Roosters” (Frosh Basket ball team) became the winning est frosh team in the history of Nyssa High School as they ran their record to 16-1 with four recent wins, all against league foes. On February 10 tiltmen ran and pressed Payette and won easily 56-35. John ‘•Cat” Ber- Ual led the winners with 14 markers. Roosters threw their vicious shadow defense at Vallivue and walked away with a 49-24 vic tory February 13. Geren Man- ley was especially tough on Vallivue’s ace David Macabee, and held him to three points in the first half. February 14 Nyssa Freshmen traveled to Bishop Kelly, and won the most exciting game of the season 55-54 on Jerry “Snick” Wilson's last second shot. The Roosters were trail ing 54-53 with six seconds left I and the ball, out of bounds. ' Wilson threw the ball in, got i return pass, and banked in a a Noontime Target NYSSA, 87-67 Weiser Wolverines rolled to an 87-67 win over Nyssa Saturday evening, with Mike Sweet leading the Weiser team with 23 points. Scoring for Nyssa were Blanch 8, Lewis 4, Ross 7, Manley 21, Engstrom 8, Martinez 9, and Moffis 10. The last game of the season will find Nyssa at John Day Friday and Enterprise will close out the home season Sa turday evening in the Nys^a High School Gym. A major target in the child nutrition area is to get lunches to 6 million needy school children this year. The school lunch program reached over 3 million of these children last year. Jack Gotta, recently-appoin ted head football coach for Ot tawa in the Canadian football league, played for Oregon State back in 1951 and 1952. He caught 29 passes for 351 yards in his senior campaign, and was drafted by the Cleveland Browns of the NFL. Gotta was the last man “cut” by the Browns at summer camp, then hooked on up in Canada where he had a great career over a lenghty span. School officials report excel- lent crowds at all the matches JUDO BOUTS o Burns Highlanders Win Wrestling Tournament; The Highlanders from Burns won the District Wrestling C hampionship in the tournament held last Saturday at Nyssa High School with 126 team points. Nyssa finished a strong se cond with 93 points, followed by Wahtonka 80, Vale 79, Enter prise 77, Madras 68, Sherman County 24, and Grant Union 7. Richard Beck, Curtis Reece and Dan Haney are the three Nyssa matmen who will repre sent their school in the State Wrestling Tournament next week at Corvallis. Beck won in the 98 pound bracket with a decision over Mannin of Burns; Reece won by default over Pa ye of Madras in the 148 pound class; and Haney was decisioned by Traver of Wahtonka for 2nd place at 141 pounds. Only 1st and 2nd place finishers in the tournament are eligible for state. The Freshmen closed their successful season this past weekend as they battled Ontario on Febuary 20 and Weiser on February 21.
