Inflation Deluxe The House of Representatives, Monday, voted by a narrow margin to retain the surtax for another year. This is considered necessary to fight inflation - the erosion of your dollar. This along with high interest rates are apparently not enough to stop it. Government spending must be slowed in every way possible, as well as personal, for luxuries. Many of the legislators casting votes on the issue have known nothing but inflationary conditions that started in the 1930’s - at the end of a long depression. For those who think a little inflation each year is not bad they should check back to the 1920’s and study the history of Germany following World War I. Such would show that the longer it continues the faster it grows and the more difficult to slow down or stop. City Manager Fred Koch found the papers (shown below) in the possessions of his father, a citizen of Germany in 1923. The top one is a charge slip from a large department store in Hamburg, Germany. The items covers soap and some wearing apparel that would have cost about $5 - $6 American money at that time. The cost was 18 billion, 400 million marks. (The mark today is worth in the neighborhood of 25?). The bottom photo is a bill of 100 million marks - so it would have taken 18,400 of these to pay for the items at that time.
