/ THE NYSSA GATE CITY JOURNAL, NYSSA, OREGON PAGE FOUR NEWS FROM BIG BEND GRANGE BY GOLDIE ROBERTS ACTIVITIES BIG BEND - Mr. and Mrs. Vai Sorensen of Wichita, Kans., arrived July 30 to visit her sis ter, Mr. and Mrs. Verl Bishop. Sorensen was honored with a birthday party that evening. Other guests were the Bill, LeRoy and Will Bishops. Ken Clary of Caldwell visited on the evening of August 4 with his sister, Mrs. Ruby English. Mrs. Dyre Roberts and Mrs. Edythe Prosser visited August 2 with Mrs. Florence Hender- lider, Mr. and Mrs. Mike Douglas in Nampa and Mrs. Agnes McClure in Caldwell. Mr. and Mrs. Charles Witty returned home July 31 from a two-week visit with their daughter, Mrs. Lorena Gillen and family at Ulysses, Kans. August 4 guests of Mr. and Mrs. Chet Smith were Mrs. Floyd Bia mire and sons of Gooding, Mr. and Mrs. Ricks Gale and daughters of Boise, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Shelton and Lona of Nyssa. Connie and Butch Gale returned home with their parents after spending a week with the Smiths. Mrs. Lucy Rogers of Roswell and Gaylene Brumbaugh of Boise visitedrecently with Mrs. Jesse Higgins. Mrs. Dyre Roberts and Mrs. Delno Brock of Sunset Valley visited July 30 with Mrs. Charlie Skelton in Roswell. Mrs. Brock and Carol were luncheon guests of the Roberts’. Mr. and Mrs. LeRoy Bishop and daughters left August 1 for their home in Spokane. Mr. and Mrs. James Mc Ginnis, Jr. of Joseph were recent weekend guests of Mr. and Mrs. James McGinnis. Missy and Jay returned home with their parents. Mrs. Al Kiester of Homedale visited July 31 with Mrs. Edythe Prosser. Kent Van deWater and Rosalie Chaney left August 5 for Victory Cove at McCall where they are attending a camp session. Mrs. Harvey Bennett spent August 2 with her daughter, Mrs. Floyd Wood at Marsing. Mr. and Mrs. Cleo Tucker and daughter of Caldwell were recent visitors in the Verl Bishop home. Mr. and Mrs. Shorty Hall and sons of Payette, Mr. and Mrs. Jim Hollingsworth and family of Boise were August 4 guests of Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Higgins. Bobby Hollingsworth remained for a longer visit. Mr. and Mrs. Ben Witty took his cousin, Dennis to Harper August 4 to see his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Hagen Anderson. Steve Davis returned home August 3 from a week at Hermiston where the Babe Ruth state tournament was held. He left again Monday morning for The Dalles where the Ontario Vandals, as state champions, will play in the regional tourna ment. Mrs. Erie Mausling has been taking her son, Mark, to Cald well where he is being fitted for special foot braces. Mr. and Mrs. Darrell English, Ross and Eleanor at tended a recent picnic at the Parma park in honor of Mr. and Mrs. Donald Cone and family of Cape Kennedy, Fla. Mrs. Verl Bishop attended an August 2 meeting of the Home Extension advisory committee at the home of Miss Sally Meeuwsen in Ontario. Mr. and Mrs. RayCartwright visited recently with Mr. and Mrs. Ora Newgen in Sunset Valley. Mr. and Mrs. Delno Brock and Carol visited August 4 with Mr. and Mrs. Dyre Roberts. Mr. and Mrs. Verl Bishop and Steve, Mr. and Mrs. Vai Sorensen drove the loop to McCall on August 4. Henderson completed basic training in the U. S. Army at Ft. Lewis on July 5, 1968. At the same time, he received his first promotion for “outstanding achievement”. He is now stationed at Ft. In Charm For Teens Mrs. Jan Barton of Nyssa was among those attending the fifteenth annual institute on "Religion in an Age of Science” held July 27 to August 3 at Star island on the Isle of Shoals, ten miles off the Maine-New Hampshire coast. The institute theme, which the 160 conferees considered, was "The Impact of Computers on the Religious Enterprise**. Treasure Valley Community college will be offering a class in personal development (charm) to young ladies between the ages of 13 and 15. This is a two-week $13 course which will be held from 1 to 3 p.m., fice days a week; and will con vene August 5 in C-2 of the administration building. The bride elect is a 1966 graduate of Nyssa high school and attended Treasure Valley Community college. The Ashcrafts returned home August 4. They report they did not have any luck. The Sparks’ remained for more fishing. Mr. and Mrs. Don Fox returned recently from a ten- day vacation trip, visiting rela tives in Pierce, Idaho; Quincy, Wash.; and Clover, Oregon. Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Mefford and family of Ontario were August 4 evening visitors in the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Tracy Mefford. Mr. and Mrs. Fred Schafei^ Steven and Robert of San Diego, arrived August 2 to spend their vacation with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Schafer. Seven Pollyanna club mem bers met August 1 in the home of Mrs. Charles Bowers. Mrs. Oscar Schafer was a guest. Next meeting will be September 5 with the place to be announced later. Mr. and Mrs. Don Thompson and girls of Seneca spent a recent weekend at the Herschel Thompson home. Mr. and Mrs. Jim Phifer and Jan attended the August 4 golden wedding anniversary celebra tion for Mr. and Mrs. H. M. Shaw in Ontario. The honorees are former Kingman Kolony residents. Mrs. Bill Toomb, Mr. and Mrs. Wesley Piercy also attended the reception. About forty members of the Conant family gathered at the Caldwell park August 4 for a picnic dinner. The occasion honored Mr. and Mrs. Charles Conant and family who will leave Monday for their home at Big Bear Lake, Calif., and Rick Conant of Nampa. He leaves today for his base in Califor nia. He is in the Navy Seabees and will leave from there for Midway Island for 18 months of duty. Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Godbout and girls of San F rancisco also attended the din ner. The family is moving to Boise where he is employed by Ore-Ida Foods, Inc. It was his 77th birthday anniversary. The din ner was held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Pat Patchen in Kuna. Others present were his children, Mr. and Mrs. Don Cone of Florida, Mr. and Mrs. R. C. Dustin Kassman and Tommy Wilson received their bobcat awards. Randy Savage, Mark Strom and Johnny Strick land were inducted into the Webelos. Strom was also awarded his Bear badge. Archie Strom lead the singing and Jim Eden was in charge of games. During the business meeting plans were discussed for the Malheur County Fair, and mem bers of the grange will assist with the food concession stand. it was decided to postpone the next meeting scheduled for August 15. Ira Price announced the next Pomona meeting will be at 8 P.M., August 24 at Boulevard grange hall. State Deputy Robert Coble was escorted to the Master’s station. He explained the $1 increase in grange dues. A highlight of the evening came during the refreshment hour when Coble related his stagecoach driving experi ences. It was during the winter of 1919 when the weather dropped to below zero for a 30-day period. He drove the stagecoach on his mail route from Rich land, Ore., to Robinette, a dis tance of 10 miles. During the time a road was under construc tion, he recalled crossing the river 26 times while on his route. He stated that by 1924 the automobile put an end to the livery stable and stage coach, and they soon became a colorful part of Oregon history.
