He is a son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Car roll of the Arcadia community, northwest of Nyssa. News About SERVICEMEN Haile Family To Be Given ‘Silver Star' The family of Staff Sgt. Don ald J. Haile, son of Canyon County Sheriff and Mrs. DaleG. Haile, have been informed that he has been awarded, posthum ously, the Silver Star for gal lantry in action, along with the Purple Heart and Combat In fantryman Badge. Prior to his death, S/S Haile had been awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Viet nam Service Medal and the Viet- GEORGE O. CARROLL MICHAEL McCRADY Michael L. McC rady, son of Mr. and Mrs. El win L. Mc Crady, 207 Ennis, Nyssa, uses a PRC-6 radio while learning Army communication techni ques. A student at the University of Oregon at Eugene, Cadet Mc- Crady is attending Army Re serve Officers Training Corps summer camp. The course began June 14 at Ft. Lewis, Wash. At the six-week summer camp, he will learn about the newest Army weapons and equipment, leadership and other military subjects and he will take part in field exercises. Upon successful completion of summer camp and graduation from college, he is eligible to be commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U. S. Army. Cadet McCrady is a 1964 graduate of Nyssa high school. GMG2 George Orville Car roll, was named LAFFEY Sail or of the month for June 1968. He was commended for out standing performance in as signed duties, for extraordinary initative in assuming additional responsibilities, for adherence to high standards of conduct and appearance both aboard and ashore. Other qualities earning him the honors were signifi cant contribution to the morale of his shipmates and members of the crew of Laffey. He also demonstrated a desire to im prove himself and displayed qualities of leadership and in itiative which are normally found in more senior petty of ficers and higher ranking Naval officers. In recognition of his extra ordinary contributions to the service, Carroll was entitled to all of the privileges granted by reference (a) for a period of 30 days from date of com mendation. After graduating from Adrian high school in 1965, George Orville went into the Navy in October that year. After basic training at San Diego, he was assigned to the USS Laffey as a seaman gunners’ mate. In the fall of 1966 he became a GMG3 (Gunners’ Mate Petty Officer Third Class). In the spring of 1968, he was advanced to GMG2 (Second Class). The Nyssa Navyman has been active F HAROLD R. CARROLL He left July 24 for basic train ing at Lackland Air Force base in San Antonio, Texas. Harold Roy is a son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Carroll of the Arcadia area on route 1, Ontario, and was graduated in 1968 from Nyssa high school. The ability to go on when ordinary men say the battle is lost, the faith one has when no one else can see a reason for it, the vision to see the rainbow before the storm is over, the will-power to go on struggling after strength is done — that is genius. nam Campaign ribbon. The awards will be present ed August 9, 1968 at Ft. Lewis, Wash., where Sgt. Haile was stationed for about one and one- half years. The presentation will be made to his widow, Mrs. Cordelia (Valdez) Haile and his children Mark and Margo of Nyssa. Sgt. Haile, a former member of the Nyssa police force, was killed in action on Feb. 9 this year. According to a letter from Lt. Col. Lyman H. Hammondd, Jr., commanding officer, Haile’s company was ‘engaged in a com bat assault against fortified hostile emplacements’ at time of his death. He was ‘mortally wounded while leading his squad in the assault.* Lt. Col. Robert B. Nelson, another infantry commander with the 196th Infantry Brigade, wrote to Sheriff Haile that ‘as evidenced by Donald’s receipt of the Silver Star, he was a courageous and unselfish sold ier who subordinated his own welfare to that of his fel lowmen.’ ■ ■ Welcome We take this opportunity to thank Dr. David Sarazin, the Malheur Memorial hospital staff and our friends for their help and thoughtfulness during our recent convalescense. - Bill and Ruth Kouns.
