Holler When You're Hurt! We, as American citizens, are noted for being easy going, tolerant of others and liberal with our purse strings. We live and let live, as long as it does not affect us too much individually. We win wars, devastate enemy countries and then spend billions of dollars to restore them to a decent standard of living. We bring slaves from Africa, keep them in bondage for genera tions, fail to educate them and then try to put them on an equal footing with ourselves in less than one generation. We are the most intelligent nation on the face of the earth- coliectively, and the richest. But we are unable to manage our own affairs. We spend our money like drunken sailors without counting what we have left for necessities (after the splurge is over). We have a guilty feeling because we are an affluent nation and our guilt affects our attitude. We forget that we are a capitalist nation with each individual able to progress according to his ability. We fight socialism and communism with our whole being because we have learned their weaknesses. But — because we have a guilt-complex about our affluence and our sympathy with those less fortunate we attempt to make up for our short comings with cash. We offer the cash to the poor, over-populated, under-educated nations throughout the world. We assume that enough money will bring their living standards near ours. This philosophy is not only that of us, as individuals, but of our federal govern ment. We haven’t learned that we can’t make a Silk Purse out of a Sow’s Ear! There must be desire for betterment! There must be an ability to make the improvement, and, there must be, regardless of how long it takes, an ability, on the part of some one to pay the bill! It seems to us that we have failed to recognize the necessary steps and the proper order of these steps to enable us to be Saviours for the rest of the world. And, if we dissipate all our resources in a failing effort, we will fall in the same class as our failing fellowmen (assuming we’re right in our thoughts.) If we believe all this, or the major part of It, all we can do is let our government know how we feel and really “HOLLER WHEN WE’RE HURT!” UVE THE WAY YOU UKE! “You are not asking for charity if you ask for help. Money given by the New York City Department of Social Services is not charity given by the rich to the poor. It is money paid for by Federal, state and local taxes.” That quote is from the foreword to a 128-page book just published by the Citizens Committee for Children of New York, and Columbia University’s Center on Social Welfare Policy and Law. Later in this $2.00 volume, which will be free to welfare clients or potential clients and antipoverty groups, it is affirmed that when there is a man in the house, and the man and woman “live with children as one family, but the man does not want to support children who are not his own, he does not have to.” “Remember,” the book says, “if a man just visits and sleeps in the house now and then, you can forget him. He does not have to support anybody." If you find such counsel shocking, perhaps you will wish to ponder this quote: • “You have the right to live the way you want to live." Do you wonder that taxpayers in 50 states are supporting almost a million persons in New York City “the way they want to live?” - Washington Exclusive Professional Directory Physicians and Surgeons K. Theme of this year’s program is “Tuck a book a week away.” All children grades 1 to 9 are invited to join the contest which will continue through August 31. To be eligible for an award a minimum of 10 books must be read. Records of the children’s progress will be kept on cards at the libarary. Next fall the cards will be pre sented to the students with the following awards: 10-19 books read, ribbons; 20-29 books, certificates; 30 or more books, certificates with gold seals. This project is in cooperation with the libraries of Ontario and Vale. Books will be mailed to anyone in the county who is unable to visit a library. The Nyssa public library also offers a reading-listening pro gram for pre-school young sters. This may serve a double purpose, as younger children are rewarded for listening, and older brother or sister may receive credits for reading aloud. A new program at the libarary is ‘‘Storytime”, held each Wednesday from 11:30 to 12 noon in the meeting room. All children ages 4 through 8 are cordially invited. Younger children are wlecome if accom panied by parents.
