PERSONALS Mrs. Frances Bates, with the aid of Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Evans and Paul Kunkel, in their three cars, took the thirteen United Methodist students of Mrs. Bates’Sunday school class to Boise May 19 to visit the Methodist Cathedral of the Rockies. They attended Sunday school classes and between ser vices, members took the Nyssans on a tour of the Cathedral. After church worship service they went to Julia Davis park for a picnic. Later the students toured the park and took boat rides on the lake. * • • Mrs. Vera Hansen of Seal Beach, Calif., arrived May 25 for a two-day visit with her cousin, Mrs. Tom Johnson. She plans to go to Boise and Rupert to visit friends and other relatives. Mrs. Johnson attended a mother-daughter banquet at the First Christian church inCald well with her daughter, Mrs. Pat Sweaney of Caldwell. ♦ ♦ ♦ Mr. and Mrs. M. C. Rossean of Springfield, Mo., and their daughter, Joyce of Miami, Fla., arrived May 24 to visit Mrs. Rossean’s sister, Dr. and Mrs. K. E. Kerby. The two families drove to Wallowa Lake to spend the weekend at the Kerby’s cabin. HELLO WORLD! MAY 22 - To Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Apodaca of Nyssa, an eight - pound, ten - ounce boy, William Clark. MAY 24 - To Mr. and Mrs. Jose Espinoza of Parma a six- pound, three-ounce boy, Edward. MAY 25 - To Mr. and Mrs. Keith Langley of Nyssa, a boy. Born at Holy Rosary hospital. No weight or name at press time. MAY 27 - To Mr. and Mrs. Ines Martinez of Nyssa, a boy. No name or weight at press time. FAMED’ COWBOY BROTHER OF NYSSAN In last week’s issue a story was published under a head line “Hugh Strickland Into Rodeo’s Hall Of Fame”. The article did not, however, make mention of the fact that the famed cowboy was a brother of Lee Strickland, a resident of the Owyhee community, near Nyssa. Any man who thinks he's more intelligent than his wife is married to a really smart woman. Main Nyssa Ph. 372-2266 ASSEMBLY OF GOD CHURCH NEWS EMORY J. HOBSON Funeral rites forEmoryJohn Hobson were conducted Mon day morning, May 27, 1968 at Nyssa Church of the Naz arene. Officiating was the Rev. Robert W. Manley, with special music provided by Former Nys- sans the Rev. and Mrs. John music provided by Former Nys- sans the Rev. and Mrs. John Bullock. Interment was made in the Nyssa cemetery, under direction of Lienkaemper chapel. Mr. Hobson succumbed Fri day at his home southwest of Nyssa, following a sudden at tack. He was born May 1, 1888 at Rockford. Ill., and at the age of 12 years, moved with his parents to Texas where they resided for a year. The family then moved to Roswell, N. M. The deceased spent his younger years on a cattle ranch and helped his father with the family business in Roswell. While still a young man, he also worked on a cattle ranch, managed a confectionary bus iness and worked in the steel mills at Gary, Ind. He was operating a confect ionary business in Artesia, N. M., when he met and mar ried Sarah Owen on July 28, 1910 Later the Hobsons farmed near Sylvia, Kans., and then operated a dry-land wheat farm near Leoti, Kans. Mr. Hobson was instrumental in starting the Sunnyside Church of the Nazarene and was a charter member of that church. He also helped to organize the Western Kansas Holiness as sociation, was a charter mem ber and served as its president for several years. The assoc iation is still conducting annual conventions. The family moved to Nyssa in 1938, pioneered on the new Owyhee irrigation project and cleared the sagebrush off of 160 acres of land. The deceased was an active member of the American Farm Bureau Federation for many years, and was assisting with the 1968 membership campaign. He was also a member of the Malheur Alfalfa Seed Growers association.
