THE GATE CITY JOURNAL MOO »3 00 Published Every Thursday at Nyssa. Malheur County, Oregon Entered at the Post Office at Nyssa. Oregon, for Trans mission through the United States Mails, as a Second Class Matter under the Act of March 3, 1879 LETTERS j THE EDITOR Dear Nyssa Friends: Maligayang Pasko!!! That’s Merry Christmas in our lan guage! I’ve wanted to write earlier, but I have hardly settled back at home when I had to leave again for a month to screen candidates for AFS 1968-69! I went to five cities, becoming ill in one city and having a serious relapse in another city before coming home!! We still have interviews until December 22, so 1 thought it best to sit down and write this Christmas letter! My pictures of my visit to Nyssa turned out quite well (good ol’ Instamatic!) and my family and friends always hear about my VERY SHORT visit. Well, maybe next year I can stay in Nyssa for a week! There were still many friends I wanted to visit and call, but 22 hours were not enough last September! We have fund-raising cam paigns and Christmas caroling, and I have about 150 Evaluations of candidates and Evaluations of 35 American students who stayed here for the summer. Aside from that, we’ve been trying to clean the office!!! (groan!) As if I haven’t enough to do, I am also enrolled this semester at the Far Eastern University (57,000 students!) every Monday, Wednesday and Friday! All radio stations (more than 25) in the city are playing Christmas carols, so with other stations in the provinces. All department stores are all decked out for the holidays, kids run around in new dresses with new toys, parties here and there, people with packages, etc. All these in contrast to the Christmas of our poor. We had our elections last month for Senators, and local officials. As usual, candidates promis ed a lot of things, especially to the poor (which constitute the majority of our 33 million population). But we don’t know and can’t tell how many of them will fulfill their pledges to help them. As my small contribution, I am participating this Christ mas vacation in a civic organiz ation’s campaign for food and clothing for theunderpriviledg- ed. AFS returnees are think ing of putting up a similar pro ject so I will also have an active part in that. It is getting cooler, especial ly in early morning and in the evenings. From Ike. 16.people are attending midnight mass and will continue to do so until Christmas day. Our celebration lasts until Jan. 6. I have so many things to be thankful for, and I feel very lucky to be stuck with a fam- ily like mine. 1 would say ‘families’, as 1 have many in the United States and around the Philippines, but I’m es pecially proud of my own fam ily. My mother has given up hoping for one of us to be SANE! They told me that they missed me while I was gone last Sept ember and November, as it was Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Malloy, so quiet here. We’ll be together Mr. and Mrs. Chet Bowns, Mrs. this Christmas though, and that Delbert Milloy and Jimmie, is just the greatest gift we could were Sunday afternoon visitors ask for. of Mr. and Mrs. Neil Coburn Maybe I could wish for a of Boise.
