the pig in.
Out of a cloud of dust, from the
direction of town, there emerged
a team of horses and a light wa
gon loaded with men. They were
coming “h - - - bent for leather—
and were not sparing the horses.”
We wondered where they were
going in such haste and were sur
prised when they came to our
gate and turned into our yard.
Businessmen Turn Out
Most of the businessmen in
town, seemed to be on board.
There was a hotel man, saloon
keeper, blacksmith and merchant,
along with some non-business
men.
Someone asked, ‘‘Having trou
ble, boys?” Well, we did have a
little trouble with a runaway pig
but it was nothing serious. They
then told how they happened to
be there. George Adams, on his
way to Ontario, had seen the
actions of the men and boys, but
due to the sagebrush, could not
see the pig.
Alarmed at what he thought
was trouble, he reported, “You
better get out to the hog ranch
as fast as you can. They are hav
ing ah---- of a fight out there.”
Running for Their Lives!
“Tietsort is after John Ward
with a butcher knife; John and
the kids ’re running for their lives.
John has a gun and stops some
times, but they all run again be
fore Tietsort can catch up with
them.”
Everyone enjoyed a good laugh.
The “rescue” party helped Dad
carry in the slain pig. Mother
and Lizzie, seeing an opportunity
to get rid of part of a mountain
of spare ribs and back bones, be
gan loading up the wagon while
the men went after the pig.
The rescuers could use them in
town, but Mother and Lizzie had
more than they knew what to do
with.
Dad told the saloon-keeper that
if he saw anyone interested in a
fight at the hog ranch to buy
them a drink and he would pay
later. I imagine that charge ac
count reflected considerable in
terest in the fracas.
Good Deeds Go Unnoticed
Businessmen in town now must
surely go on many similar mis
sions, but since they do not use
a team, their good deeds probably
go unnoticed.
There is nothing like a panting,
wild - eyed, lathered - up team of
horses to show that a proper
amount of effort was expended.
Some Journal readers knew all
the people mentioned in this lit
tle comedy. Some may remember
hearing of the little incident,
while others may have heard of
it and forgotten.
It happened 65 years ago, come
hog-killin’ time this fall.
