THE NYSSA GATE CITY JOURNAL, NYSSA, OREGON THURSDAY, JUNE 2. 1986 Seven Malheur Pomona Grangers Receive Obligation at May 21 Session Malheur Pomona Grange No. 33 met in regular form in the Fifth Decree and was lowered to work in the Fourth De gree Saturday evening, May 21, at Ontario Heights Grange hall. Master Ira Price called on Legislative Chairman William Ross for a report and he apoke on the cigarette tax bill and f amendment to the method of selecting a state superinten dent of public instruction. Mr. und Mrs. Billy Day und family of San Lorenzo, Calif., are visiting his parents, Mr and Mrs Claude Duy. They spent the weekend fishing ut Owyhee res ervoir. Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Duy und sons of Payette visited May 25 with the Claude and Billy Day couples. Homeniude ice cream was served. The new policy of choosing outstanding boys and girls has been successful since its b<- ginning last December. Canning Contest Winners Named Winners at the Pomona level in the White Satin Sugar canning contest were, in the tree fruit division, Pauline Rosa, first; Ethel Faw. second; Clara Price, third. In the jelly division, victors were I Effie Standage, first; Ethel Faw, second; Pauline Ross, third. These entries will be judged nt State Grange session in Sil verton July 13 through 17. Memorial service was conduct ed by Chaplain Bertha Sonner, Master Ira Price, Secretary Clara Price and Effie Standage. Flora. The altar win decorated with peonies in memory of departed Grangers. Fifth Degree Grangers Named Seven Grangers were given the Fifth Degree obligation. They are Karren and Jack Rule, Ernest und Ramona Hines, Betty and John Collier of Ontario Heights Grunge and Mrs. Lula Noah of Boulevard Grange. During th«- lecturer’s hour. Wil. bur Atherton, master of Boule vard Grange, showed slides he had taken at the county - wide banquet in February. Ontario Heights Grange served lunch to 42 members from six Granges. A resolution was read liianking the host.« for their hos pitality. Next Pomona meeting will be in August. Father Suffers Attack Charles “Tex" Doty, father of Mrs Wally Steiner, was taken to Caldwell Memorial hospital May 24 following a heart attack. He is reported to be in critical condition. Mrs. Florence Gowey, Mrs. Lois Durocher and family, Miss Pat Long, all of Boise, and William Gowey of Wheatridge, Colo., were May 24 evening dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. G. E. Mackey and family. Mr. and Mrs. Carl Lovitt, Mr. and Mrs. G. E. Mr. Johnson, district supervis or, will give a talk on manage ment and future plan« of the dis trict and all directors who are present will be introduced. There will be a coffee hour ufter the program, to which the public is invited. At the last session, Nu Acres Grange members voted to co sponsor Jeannie Clement to the 4-H club congress in Moscow this month. She is a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Buel Clement of Fruit land. BOISEANS VISIT MOTHER Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Cook of Boise visited Sunday and Mon day with his mother, Mrs. Angie Cook. VISIT IN OLSEN HOME Mr. and Mrs. Leland Schom burg of Nampa visited Memorial Day with Mrs. J C. Olsen. JACK L. BLACKFORD (left), son of Edrie Black ford; Ronnie V. McCain (center), son of the Ver non McCains, all of route 1, Nyssa: and James C. Houston (right), whose parents are Mr. and Mrs. Cecil R. Houston of the Arcadia area, enlisted on May 20 at the U. S. Navy recruiting station in Boise, according to a Naval news release. Black ford and McCain are 1965 graduates of Adrian high school and Houston was graduated the same year from Nyssa high. Shortly after receiving the oath, the three men left Boise for San Diego v'hrre they will undergo approximately 11 weeks cf basic training. Upon completion of recruit training, they will be granted two-week leaves, prior to reporting to their next duty station for specialized Naval duty. The publication, "Vegetable Garden Insect Pest«,” was pre pared for home gardeners or small - acreage growers. Robert Every, OSU extension entomolo gist, and H. H. Crowell and II. £. Morrison of the OSU Entomology department, prepared the publi cation. Included are recommended con centrations of common insecti cides for use in small quantities and usual intervals between the last application of insecticides and harvest to avoid excessive resi dues. Insects and the damage they cause are described and pictured. Suggested controls accompany the list. All materials recommended in the publication for use in home gardens are available in small packages at seed or garden sup ply stores.
