OREGON PAGE EIGHT Origin of Valentine's Day Discussed Meeting in Topliff Residence By Mrs. Wilson Witt NEWELL HEIGHTS - Modem Pioneer club meeting was held Feb. 2 at the home of Eleanor Topliff with 11 women and six children in attendance. President Thelma Borge was in charge of the business meeting and roll call was answered by each member telling how she met her husband Mrs. Borge read an article on the origin of Valentine’s day and stated that it began as a day of love and devotion between friends and sweethearts. The group voted to purchase a bond and decided to take articles of clothing to the next meeting, which will, in turn, be taken to the Presbyterian nursing home at Ontario. Four members received birth day gifts and it was decided to continue the 10-cent birthday col lection for another year. Prior to adjournment the women worked on club yearbooks. Next meeting will be March 2 at the home of Dale Witt and roll call will be an Irish song title in pantomime. Released From Hospital Mrs. Carl Fenn returned home Feb. 2 from Caldw’ell Memorial hospital and is reported to be greatly improved. Messrs, and Mmes. Gerrit Stam and Pete VanderOord of Nyssa, Mr. and Mrs. John Timmerman of Ontario, Mr. and Mrs. Claude Stam were Sunday evening din ner guests in the Luit Stam home The occasion honored the latter on his birthday anniversary. Mr. and Mrs. Harry Warren visited Sunday afternoon in the Irvin Topliff home. Mrs. Jake Borge served dinner Saturday evening to Mr. and Mrs. Sid Hardman and daughters in honor of Mrs. Hardman's birth day anniversary. Mr. and Mrs. Jim Phifer were Friday evening visitors in the Dick Kriegh residence. Card Group Meets Happy Dozen card group met Friday afternoon at the home of Mrs. Glenn Ward in Adrian. Guest players were Laura Brock and Ima Begeman. Prize winners were Minnie Stam. Marge Loo ney, Agnes and Sue Ashcraft. Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Judd of Jerome. Van De Water and Kent of Big Bend. Mr and Mrs. John Fahtenbruch were Sunday afternoon visitors in the Wilson Witt home. Mrs. Frankie Worden visited on Saturday evening with her daughter, Mary in Ontario, and the twosome attended a basket ball game. Sunday afternoon visitors in the Ray Simpson home were the couple’s son and daughter-in-law. Mr and Mrs. Gene Simpson and family. Renee Hardman attended a birthday party Saturday evening honoring Pamela Parker of Ad rian. Brother Succumbs in Lebanon Mrs. Anna Pratt received word Sunday that her brother. John Steen, had succumbed suddenly that morning on his farm He was 82 years old and had reportedly been suffering recent strokes. Mrs Pratt and her two sons and daughter-in-law. Gene Pratt, Mr and Mrs Louis Pratt, left Monday morning for Lebanon. Mr. and Mrs. Irvin Topliff and family visited Sunday evening with Leslie Topliff at Malheur Memorial hospital. Sunday afternoon visitors in the Carl Fenn home were Mr. and Mrs. Duane Fenn of Vale, the Gene Simpson family, Mrs. Al- zina Salter, Mrs. Delores Sharp and children. Mr. and Mrs. Wes- ley Walker and family were eve- ning visitors. Mrs. Verna Costley of Home- dale was a Sunday dinner guest of her mother Mrs. Lydia Wor den. Mr. and Mrs. Gerrit Timmer man. Mr and Mrs. Ray Laan and sons of Parma were recent eve ning dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. Luit Stam. Friday evening visitors in the Stam home were Messrs, and Mmes. Klaas Laan and Klaas Hart. Return From Vacation Mr. and Mrs. John Fahrenbruch returned Feb. 2 from a six-week vacation trip to California, Texas and Mexico. They spent a week with their son. Alan at Menlo Park, Calif., and also visited Mrs Fahrenbruch’s sister at Compton Mr. and Mrs. Earl Ward were Sunday dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. Rollo Fenn. In the afternoon the two couples visited Mr. and Mrs. Carl Fenn and with the Tom Churchills in Homedale. Mrs. Donna Goulding is report ed to have rheumatic fever. She and her sons are staying with her sister, Mrs. Thelma Hammon. Mrs. Goulding had been working at the Presbyterian nursing home in Ontario. Mr. and Mrs. Jim Owens, Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Megorden of Payette recently called at the Hammon home to visit with Mrs. Goulding. Mrs. Owens is head nurse at the nursing home. Johnny Zittercob of Fruitland spent the weekend with his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. John Zittercob. Otis Bullard Has Surgery Otis Bullard entered Malheur Memorial hospital Sunday eve ning and underwent surgery the following morning. Mrs. Emma Thompson of Em mett spent from Thursday until Saturday in the home of Mr. and Mrs. John Zittercob. They took her to the Al Thompson home near Adrian Saturday evening. The trio visited Friday evening in the Otis Bullard home, together with Mr. and Mrs. Theo Matherly. Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Bowers were Saturday evening dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. Don Bow ers at the Downtowner in Boise. Lee Dail, Jimmy and David visited Sunday in the George Moeller and Otis Bullard homes Visit Former Residents Mr. and Mrs. Otis Bullard re turned home Jan. 31 from a week’s visit with Mr. and Mrs. Guy Schaffer at Hermiston, Mr and Mrs. Otto Sabin in Boardman and with Mr. and Mrs. A. A. Berthelsen in Sunnyside. Wash. Mr. and Mrs. Sabin are former residents of Arcadia and the Berthelsens are former teachers at Arcadia school Both are now instructors in the Sunnyside school system. Mrs. Ernest Stephenson spent last week in Boise with her granddaughter, Linda Richardson, who had an appendectomy and ««pent a week in St. Luke’s hos- pital. Mrs. Brady Hospitalised Mrs. J. I. Brady was a patient in Holy Rosary hospital last week for treatment and observation. Mrs. Marvin Jensen of Boise and Mrs. George Boyack of Meri dian spent Monday with their father, Otis Bullard, who had surgery. Miss Kathryn Baird, who had been in the nursing home wing of Malheur Memorial hospital for the past month, moved last week to the home of Mrs. Leon Warner in Ontario. Mrs. Cecil Houston visited Saturday with Miss Baird. VISIT IN PARENTAL HOME Weekend guests in the Tom Weeks home were the Glen Weeks and Plais Johnson families of Parma, the Dareld Steinkes of Vale, Mr. and Mrs. John Weeks of Seneca. Mr. and Mrs. Duane Weeks and family of Milwaukie, Mr. and Mrs. John Van Zelf. Mrs. Duane Weeks and daughter re mained for a longer visit with her husband’s parents. THURSDAY. FEBRUARY 10. 19«8 LINDA MECHAM . . . To Attend Counseling Session ♦ ♦ Senior Scouts Tell Of Recent Activities Senior Girl Scouts of Nyssa went on a sledding party Jan. 18 to a place near Idaho Falls. En route they visited Lucky Peak dam and saw a tree nursery where grass and trees grow near the snow. Linda Mecham and Carol Greig are conducting a service project for younger Nyssa scouts by tea ching them Girl Scout songs to be presented at the father-daugh ter banquet. Linda has received word from officers of the Silver Sage coun cil that she has been selected as representative for the summer Counselor-in-Training session and Carol has been chosen as alter nate delegate. The Girl Scout group met Jan. 20 in the Nyssa high school build ing to discuss plans for the forth coming banquet to be held in February. The girls also decided to wear their uniforms twice each month. Members of the troop attended a Feb. 5 meeting of the Senior Girl Scout planning board. Joumal Classifieds Bring Results! Seaman Recruit Theodore E. Krause is now undergoing seven weeks of basic training at the Great Lakes center in Illinois, ac cording to a recent Navy news release. He is a son of Mr and Mrs. Virgil T Krause of route 2. Nyssa. Under supervision of veteran Navy petty officers, he is receiv ing instructions in naval history and organization, customs and courtesies, ordnance and gunnery, seamanship, damage control, first aid, swimming and survival, ship board drills and sentry duty. Military drills are emphasized during recruit training, and with various inspections and a planned physical fitness program, keep the recruits mentally and physically alert. Upon completion of his recruit training. Ted will be unsigned to a school, shore station or ship, according to his Navy classifica tion tests, his own desires and the needs of the Navy.
