Michigan If I were the devil and wanted to turn America into a Communist Hell, I think I would do something like this: I would cultivate among the people the idea that the individual is nothing, the indiscriminate mass of people everything. I would also seek to convince Americans that God and Christian ethics and an honest desire to make one’s way in the world are old-fashioned. I would get elected to office on the promise of help ing everybody at someone else's expense. Then, I'd treat the Constitution as a sort of handbook on the philosophy of government to be referred to only if it served my purpose. I would increase the size and scope of government in every way possible, going into every conceivable business in competition with established enterprises, paying the State’s business losses out of the Treasury. I would try to keep hidden how this could lead at the right time to the nationalization of industry. I would thus create a government strong enough to give its citizens everything they want. Thus, I could create a government strong enough to take from them everything they have. By a combination of inflation and taxes, I would rob the very people I pretended to help until, if they ever should want to return to freedom, they couldn’t — but would be dependent on the State. Next, I would gradually raise taxes to 100 percent of income (we are one-third of the way now) — so that the State could have it all. Then I’d give back to the people enough to keep them alive and little enough to keep them enslaved. In the meantime, I would take from those who have and give to those who want until I killed the incentive of the presently ambitious man and satisfied the meager needs of the rest. The police state would then be requir ed to make everybody work — and the transformation of America from a Republic to a second-rate Communist nation would be complete. Do you see in this similarities to what we have been doing for 30 years? ! LETTERS To the Editor Route 1 Nvssa. Oregon July 28, 1965 Nyssa Gate City Journal Nyssa, Oregon To the Editor: I’ve never put my two-cents- worth into print, but I’m too dis- I gusted now not to do so. What do you do when you've spent most of the summer work- ■ ing in your garden because we i feel it a necessity (we have eight children), then those spray planes come along with “systox" and you certainly have no use for it? I’ve not complained (except to myself) when the aircraft seems to dive-bomb me at midnight or in the wee hours, I didn’t sav much when our garden got defo- bated early last year when they were killing the hay, but now before I hardly get started har- I vesting my garden, they're at it again. Oh yes. in three weeks if I’m lucky and the planes don't spray, which they did again last week. I may get a mess of something if it’s still doing all right. But how do I know they won’t return to spray some evening when I’m not at home, and then I’ll go out and get some garden product soon? I was informed that if I had children. I should watch them for at least three days if the yard was sprayed (which it was) for signs of stomach cramps, vomiting and even convulsions if the sick ness is bad enough. The informer said the spray is twice as deadly as strychnine. On the cans it says. “Bury con tents. rinse with lye and bury container and all at least 18 inches deep." Do they? No. you find them almost anywhere. The junk yards are full of them. What is a person to do; can’t they be more careful? Cows shouldn’t even eat sprayed food, and I don’t think my family needs to. either! Please, spray pilots: Stay away from the house and garden . . . Just get the BUGS in the hav, NOT US!
