SUGAR BOWL OSU Zoologist Reports Bird Migration To and From Oregon During Winter j I ■ I Millions of birds migrate from Oregon to warmer south lands each fall but lesser numbers (still counted in millions) come to the state from the north for the winter, an Oregon State university zoologist points out. Western Oregon is a fairly good winter area for waterfowl and some small birds, Storm notes. Starlings overwinter here in tremendous numbers from* the Plain states, for example. i legged hawk, shore birds, pipit Most Oregonians would be and several sparrows. willing to see them go some Oregon’s bird migrations start August and probably reach a place else, Storm notes, be in peak in late September and Octo Standings Bulldogs To Meet John Day Dec. 7 cause they’re becoming a serious nuisance. Several sea gulls that nest in northlands, such as Alaska, mi grate down to the Oregon coast, he reports. The common gull of eastern Oregon moves to the coast also for the winter. And the common sea gull of the Oregon coast, the Western gull, stays here all year. Gulls Resemble Each Other That means that several kinds of gulls are present on the Ore gon coast during the winter. Only an expert can tell them apart, ac cording to Storm. Other birds that migrate here i for the winter include the rough- j "HAVE STEAM CLEANER WILL TRAVEL !" ber but continue well into De cember. Those that leave Oregon for warmer climates include the turkey vulture, night hawk, fly catchers, swallows and most warblers. Many Stay in State A sizeable number of well- known Oregon birds don’t mi grate at all. These include the meadow lark, blackbirds, jay, song sparrow, most western Ore gon hawks and probably robins— although robins apparently d o some shifting of areas from sea- son to season. Quails and pheasants — poor long - distance fliers — stay the year around in Oregon, too. IN OREGON BEER IS A NATURAL sim Q- u % As natural as the wholesome grains and tangy hops from which it is brewed, beer is Oregon’s traditional beverage of moderation —light, sparkling, delicious. And naturally, the Brewing Industry is proud of the good living it provides for so many folks in Oregon. Not only for employees of the Brewing Industry itself, but also for the farmers and other suppliers of beer’s natural ingre dients. In Oregon, beer belongs—enjoy it . . . GIVE US A TRY!
