Entered at the Post Office at Nyssa, Oregon, for Transmission Through the United States Mails, as a Second Class Matter Under the Act of March 3, 1879, Controversial But Confident Frequently, during the three short years of editing the Journal, we have had editorials or a column on a wide variety of subjects. Judging by the response received we could have believed they were unread or so weak as not to warrant comment. But since the controversy arose over the school bud gets we have suddenly taken on an importance that we have difficulty accepting with meekness. Both sides have belabored us for not taking an editorial stand—with each expecting us to support their views. We have been accused of slanting our reporting, of using headlines that were misleading and of taking a personal dig at individuals through some of our wording. These are not new complaints — there have just been more of them than usual. We suppose it is only natural that some people get angry for facts reported that they wish were different. And it is understandable that most people have a feeling that they could do a better job of running a newspapier than is being done. (And piossibly many could!) But in this country a newspaper is a private enter prise whose business is news. The editor must decide what he will print and assume responsibility for it. If he printed only the good or the bad the public would be ill-informed of what was happening in the community. We believe what the school board does and the voters do are much more important than our comments upon their actions And it would be highly presumptious on our part for us to try to tell a well-informed pieople what is good for them. The American way is for the people to be heard — the Communist way is to tell the people. We reserve the right to say what we wish on the editorial page or to remain quiet. And like any other private citi zen we feel free to make oral comments, pro or con, on the subject we desire. WE BELIEVE ... (1) The present school board Is dedicated to having an excellent school for Nyssa. (2) That most of the items in the original budget would have been conducive to a better school. (3) That the token cut of $2100 in the second budget was not carefully thought through with the idea of sell ing it to enough NO VOTERS for it to pass. Communica tion with the voters was lacking. (4) The school board’s public relations have been poor throughout the year with too much effort to sell the pro gram at voting time. (5) Too little attention has been paid to personal grievances that may have had some truth in them. (These can mushroom into considerable NO VOTES at election time.) (6) The viewpoint of the teacher has been given prece dence over that of the taxpayer. (7) That the big majority of NO VOTERS are not op posed to good education, within what they consider their means to f>ay, and should not be classed as not caring what happens to our school. It is possible they question the merit of parts of the program proposed by the board. Or possibly they do not understand the complex budget. (8) Opponents of the budget should be willing to let the board know their objections. (9) Personal grievances should not enter into the budget, unless the board refused to act on them (10) Nyssa has nothing to be ashamed of in having the oudget defeated two times. It is the state and national trend to vote down issues that increase taxes. It could be a healthy situation, if it enables the people to learn more about their school system and to take a more active part tn its operation. ,2IT?ai, the board ha* cut »he amount down, for this third election, as much aa they dare without Im pair ng basic education for our children.
