Freedom of the Press Entails Accuracy in Publishing The daily “blotter” printed at Boise under the name of THE IDAHO DAILY STATESMAN has done it again! We have been accustomed to their getting names, places and dates wrong but were shocked by their Feb. 5 morn ing edition headline libeling the city of Nyssa. They used a 30-point, two-line head saying, “SIX NYSSA YOUTHS CHARGED WITH KIDNAPING GIRL, 15.” The only thing wrong with this was that NONE of the youths so charged were from Nyssa. Five were given a Parma address and the sixth listed as from Horseshoe Bend—all in Idaho. This was in the second paragraph of their story crediting the NYSSA YOUTHS with the crime. We don’t believe there was any malicious intent on the part of the paper nor do we find fault with the re porting. But to give it a careless, misleading head can have the same effect as if the intent to slander an indi vidual were there. The worst part, to us, is that two days after the story appeared there has been no effort to print a correction. In Tuesday’s paper the youths were correctly referred to as Idahoans when they were arraigned in court—but no reference to the previous error. We believe a town can be damaged by newspaper re ports the same as individuals and that the same care should be used in recording events pertaining to them. When one of our local attorneys represented a client charged with drunken driving this same paper reported the attorney was so charged—but it ran a retraction as sqon as possible since there was a legal liability. Com mon courtesy in the case of Nyssa calls for no less. Nyssa’s Mayor Grant H. Rinehart issued the following statement in commenting on the story: “When I was a student attending Oregon State uni versity, the head of the journalism department would have made every effort to have any person removed from his department and further, an attempt would be made by him to have such student removed from the in stitution for writing headlines so poorly related to the subject matter as the headline and article appearing in the Idaho Daily Statesman on Monday, Feb. 5. “Our professor would have considered anyone with such careless habits as not fit for the privileges of higher education. “I am well aware that we have the right to freedom of speech, freedom of press, etc., but with this freedom comes the responsibility of accuracy in reporting. “Any community has enough ‘dirty laundry’ to wash without having our neighbors’ added to the pile.” Another Reason for Buying Flowers From a Reliable Florist . . .
