We have been reading “A Nation of Sheep” by Wil liam J. Lederer (co-author of “The Ugly American”) in which he takes to task TV, radio and newspapers for not checking on their reports of foreign affairs. We feel sure he knows weeklies are unable to do this and must rely on other sources that they hope are reliable. But he might say that we do not give enough infor mation on foreign affairs for the benefit of readers who do not have, or take, enough time to know what is trans piring in other countries. The book is highly critical of our foreign policy and our efforts to buy friendship, by the administrations of both political parties, since the end of World War II. He often cites the Congressional Record as proof of his charges of waste, corruption and fruitless efforts. Usu ally this has been discovered months or years afterwards and little said about it lest it reflect on the party in power. What the Individual Can Do In order not to be as “sheep,” we, as individuals, can let our feelings be known to our lawmakers and to our president. If we think their planning is good and sound we should let them know we support them wholeheart edly. If we think it bad or poor, we should let them know in plain language. They are politicians first and states men second, if they fall in this class, and concerted effort will have an effect—the votes are still counted one at a time. We feel that the president is right in drawing a line for the Communists and just hope he doesn’t try and more negotiation with those who break a pact at their desires. Our treaty with them Sept 12, 1944, made Berlin a free city but today’s headlines indicate that the eastern portion of the city has been sealed off for travel to West Berlin. There can be little question that this was done at the insistence of Khrushchev to stop East Germans from migrating to West Germany. We would not advocate force in removing this barrier but believe an economic blockade of East Germany and all the other Communist nations would soon bring them to terms that we could live with until all countries be came aware of the failure of the Communistic form of government. But we must become aware that the situation can be explosive and prepare ourselves for the worst. We would favor a resumption of testing our bombs and discovering new methods of use. If they respect only force, then we should be prepared to use force in the greatest possible way as the best deterrent to an all-out war. Farewell Bend Road Advocated (From Malheur Enterprise. Vale) A county road from Farewell Bend on the Snake River to Vale, following the original Oregon Trail was discuss ed by former County Judge G. Y. Chester before the Vale Chamber of Commerce last Tuesday. The distance be tween these two points is only 20 miles, compared with the more than 40 now separating them. A sportsman fishing on the Snake would be able to make a very short trip to the Owyhee instead of thread ing the tortuous highway now necessary. Tourists head ed for the south could cut miles off their route, particu larly when Idaho finished work on South 30 which will tie into Lytle Boulevard around Adrian. The new Glenn Street bridge leading into the high speed Lytle Boulevard would aid immensely in the prac ticability of such a road being constructed. We believe Vale should start a push to secure the nec essary rights-of-way. We don’t think it necessary to spell out the manifold advantages to Vale of having sucn a road. Nor do we believe the ranchers living in the back country would think it necessary to point out, item by item, the luxury of having this a farm-to-market road. As Judge Chester pointed out, workers on welfare this winter could install culverts, and work on the right of way with practically no additional cost to the county. The feasibility of reconstructing this portion of the Oregon Trail can be realized when even now it is possible to drive (preferably with a Jeep) from Vale to Farewell Bend over the original Oregon Trail.
