Ln recognition of June as Dairy
month, Harry Sandquist, county
agricultural agent, has furnished
the Journal with facts and figures
that show the importance of this
industry to Malheur county.
According to Sandquist, Mal
heur is the leading dairy county
in the entire state of Oregon, with
approximately 900 farmers re
ceiving all or part of their income
from the sale of dairy products.
He estimates the gross income
to dairy farmers at about $4*4
million for 1959, since the total.
including sale of surplus and
young stock, was $4,050,000.
Malheur county is not only the
number one county in the sale
of dairy products but is also con
sidered the fastest growing in
Oregon. Starting with 2,500 dairy
cattle in 1920 the number has
riculture teacher.
Paul Seaquist, son of Mr. and
Mrs. Roger Seaquist of Vale, was
judged first place winner.
Taking second place was Don
ald Costley. son of Mrs Verna
Costley of Adrian and third place
went to Jerry Levanger, son of
Mr. and Mrs. Ross Levanger of
Ontario. John Peterson, son of
Mr. and Mrs. Glen W. Peterson,
placed fourth. All winners were
awarded trophies.
Other towns in this district who
were not represented are Baker
and Halfway.
Seaquist will compete in a state
contest to be held at the state
fair grounds in Salem.
practically doubled each 10 years
since then, with an estimated 19,-
