tnt THURSDAY. JANUARY 21. l»0 Oregon State Board Reviews 1959 Works One of the outstanding events which marked state forestry in Oregon during 1959 was sale of the last large block of fire-killed timber in the Tillamook burn, thus marking the end of the big time logging in one of the largest salvage projects in the country, according to the Oregon board of forestry. The sale consisted of a block of 15,000,000 board feet of snags in the Kilchis river watershed that went to Diamond Lumber com pany. The timber will be pro cessed in the company’s plants in Tillamook. When this last block of timber is logged it is estimated that total recovery will amount to about six billion board feet of timber. The total footage killed in the fires of 1933, 1939 and 1945 has been estimated at 13.1 billion board feet. Other outstanding events in cluded low fire losses; emphasis on forest rehabilitation; develop ments in weather equipment; ra diological training; continued em phasis on insect, disease and ani mal damage to the forests; ex pansion of the farm forestry pro gram; conservation act adminis tration; and a complete reorgan ization of the state safety pro gram. Fire Record Excellent The area burned on the 12,000,- 000 acres of forest land coming under jurisdiction of the state and association units was held to 20,843 acres in spite of the very hazardous fire season that was marked by record breaking per iods of high fire hazard. The number of fires was listed at 623, with 114 of them having been caused by lightning. The Southwest Oregon state unit was hardest hit with a total of 6,152 acres burned. Next in line came Douglas with 5,361 acres, followed by Central Oregon with 3,310 acres, Klamath with 2,929 and Coos with 1,832. Thus all except 1,259 acres was burned in the five units. 2 Personal NYSSA BANK DAYS—Win $100 first prize, $10 second prize or $5 third prize Tuesday, Jan. 26, at 3 p m. in Nyssa.
