SEPTEMBER 3. 1959 10 Cents Per Copy NUMBER 35 Nyssa Winners Listed at Malheur County Fair, Termed Best in Years' Second Annual Treasure Days Slated For Sept 19; Prizes, Events Listed The awarding of ribbons and prizes in front of the grand stand Saturday evening wound up what many called the best County Fair in years. The fair officials voiced their praise of all who had taken part in making the fair a success, and were especially lavish of their praise for those in charge of the entertainment planned for the afternoons and evenings, •and gave much credit to this cause for the large crowds in | attendance each day. Fair board chairman Blaine 1 Girvin of Vale presided at the award ceremonies. Nyssa’s second annual Treasure Days is set for Sept. 19. with $600 in cash prizes for adults, and a dog show and prize drawings for youngsters among the featured attractions. Four drawings for $150 each are set for 1:30, 3, 4 and 5 p.m. on Main St. Children between the age» of 4 and 12 may reg ister for prizes, and children of all ages may enter pets in the dog show, to be held at Third* and Main at 2:30 p.m. The regular Nyssa Bank Days list will be used for the $150 drawings, with those not Nyssa First Grade Enrollment Booms First grade enrollment in Nyssa swelled to 143 students this week, 18 more than the anticipated en rollment of 125 students. The ex pected enrollment was determin ed by a census taken prior to school opening. Sixth grade enrollment, how ever, is down to 108 students, Supt. W. L. McPartland said, which may mean a teacher shift from the sixth to the first grade to level out the teaching load. Other grade school classes re ported enrollments at near the expected figures, McPartland said. Junior high Principal Muri Lan caster and high school Principal Gene Chester said enrollment in their schools were near the fig ures anticipated. on the list asked to register at the Idaho Power Co. office. The Harper Grange was award ed the Grand Champion ribbon and $50 cash for the best com munity exhibit at the fair. In the garden club exhibits On tario Garden Club was first place winner with its theihe of getting ready for the first Malheur County fair in 1909. The Nyssa Town and Country Garden Club won second with an exhibit built around the theme “Reflections.” Among other Nyssa winners and the classes were: Land Prod ucts—Junior Atagi of Route 1, the Malheur Potato Crowers Cup for the best potato exhibit; Den- nis Spitze, Beal Seed Co. trophy for the best corn exhibit by an FFA member, and Spitze also won the Malheur County Farm Bur eau plaque for the most outstand ing boy at the fair. Grand Champion Stock—Dean Sisson won the Statesman trophy and cash award for the best fat hog. FFA Award—Top man for the awards was Dean Sisson; FFA Team Award—.Nyssa team won a permanent trophy and banner for judging breeding hogs and foi livestock judging. Adrian Lions Club award went to Dean Sisson for the grand champion female swine.
