To escape comment or criticism, do nothing, be nothing, say nothing. Don't Sell Your Community Short Periods of economic adjustment, whether they are booms, depressions, recessions or intervals of attempting to maintain a normal status quo, frequently bring un easiness to those concerned with the well-being of their community. “Recession” is the tag attached to the present econo my which has even the experts scratching their heads while trying to define the cause or recommend a cure. Many of them are not even sure that such a situation actually exists, but they are agreed that it is spotted throughout the nation and not general as have been other such periods in history. Layoffs in the logging industry in central Oregon and cutbacks in automobile manufacturing in Detroit undoubtedly in time could have adverse effects on the entire nation. So far the slump has not reached this area, other than through the tax bills most of us are having to pay to help bail out the rich and the poor in so-called distress areas. The fear of a recession or even a depression can easily be turned to an advantage insofar as small communities like Nyssa or any other part of Malheur county and Treasure Valley are concerned. Most business firms here report their volume of sales has been holding steady this ear, but the unconscious fear “that something might n l appen” is obviously adding impetus to create more busi ness and at the same time maintain fair prices for mer chandise and services. Ontario has been showing excellent growth for sev eral months and for this, we in Nyssa should and do re joice. The growth of all towns in the county adds new capital, new people and more overall buying power. The same is true for all of Treasure Valley, whether it’s Boise at the south end or Weiser at the north end. That apprehension that Ontario is going to run away from Nyssa in growth is good and already is having its beneficial effects here where new business is coming in, old businesses are continually expanding and new homes are being built. None of the progress is as rapid nor as noticeable as any of us would like, but too often we are so close to the every day growth we fail to see the forest for the trees. In spite of statistics that reveal a nationally declining farm population, rural communities are the back-bone of the nation’s economy and well-being. 'SHOP NYSSA AND SAVE!
