Entered at the postoffice at Nyssa, Oregon, for transmission through the United States Mails, as a second class matter under the act of March 3, 1879 "Adrian Rocket Men" Set Pattern For Many Fields oi Leadership One of the greatest thrills we have experienced in many months occurred Sunday when we were privileged to witness preparations for, and the firing of, a rocket by Adrian nigh school’s Science club. Steve Sayre, Donald Ashcraft, Larry Norris and Les Brice conceived the idea of the rocket some five months ago and have had one successful launching and a few misfires, all of which have added tremendously to their knowledge, experience and self-training. Their enthus iasm is spreading to many of their fellow students. The scientific aspects and the home-made rocket itself, while a pleasure to inspect, are secondary inso far as our exultation is concerned. These boys were able to instill a feeling of utmost confidence in them by the manner in w'hich they are handling their strictly elec tive project. They represent leadership and ability to make elabo- rate plans many adults might ¿ht copy for any field of en- deavor. There was a decided absence of “youthful foolhardi ness’’ or thrill-seeking desire, but an air of comradeship accompanied by their American-like banter that never once overbalanced their common sense when the exact moment came to become serious in their preparations. There was every indication of well-planned safety meas ures for themselves and for other youngsters and adults present to witness the launching. These young men actually radiated their scientific reasoning, months of study and devotion to a project that has suffered some minor setbacks that only spur them on to greater efforts for another successful launch ing of a better and more accurate rocket. Adrian and Nyssa both have hundreds of youngsters who are daily displaying similar leadership and common- sense reasoning, but adults are too often prone to over look or take for granted the merits of youth. The “Adrian Rocket Men” are cited because they have started some thing different in this area and the human angle can not and should never be overlooked. While the project did not actually come from the class rooms, the idea was germinated in Adrian high school, which, along with parents of the boys and the entire community, can be justly proud that initiative, leadership and self-discipline have not faded from the American scene insofar as adolescents are concerned. Mrs Kinsey Keveren, president of Women’s Society of Christian Service, western district of the Idaho conference and Miss Ellen Sager. Idaho Conference Women’s Society youth delegate, both of Nyssa. will be among 10,000 Methodist women attending the Fifth assembly of the Women’s Society of Christian Service in St Louis, May 6-9. The assembly is being planned by the Women’s Division of Chris tian service of the board of mis sions of the Methodist church. The theme will be “Christ’s Message for Today.” Afternoon sessions of the assembly will con sist of discussion groups on na tional and international issues as they affect the missionary out reach of the Methodist church. Donald Bergam Donald G. Bergam of Nyssa has been selected for membership in the biological sciences honorary at Oregon State college. To qualify for membership in Phi Sigma, students must demon strate high scholarship and prom- ! ise of future achievement in one of the biological science fields of study.
