S ince there was no w a te r for ir rig atio n and they had only three head of cattle he trapped some of the wildlife th at abounded on the hom estead w hile they began to build up th eir herd. A bundance of Coyotes In addition to the ab u n d an t coyotes (at one tim e th a t first sum m er the young Mrs. K nott- ingham counted as m any as seven of them running across the clea r ing less than 30 feet from th eir tent.) his trap s took th eir toll of Bob Cats, Lynx and Badger. T here was still no w ell on the dryland hom estead th at first w in te r and the fam ily m elted snow for their own usp and for th eir stock. N ext spring they had a w e'l-drilling rig down from W ash ington that put dow n a w ell a l leviating this problem , at least. For over 11 years the K notting- ham.s worked and lived on th eir hom estead. He trapped all this tim e to supnlem ent the grow ing h erd of cattle. They raised rye h ay on the u n-irrigated land to feed the stock. T heir nearest neighbor, “except w hen the sheepm en w ere dow n,” was 12 miles aw ay. D uring the long w in ter m onths th ere was “q u ite a bit of snow ” w ith the fam ily being snowed in several tim es. Mrs. Counsil recalls th at 30 degrees below was com m on and 40 below happened “every once in a w hile." S u rv iv e Flu of 1918 D uring these 11 years the Knot- tingham fam ily grew . Bon John w as born in A ugust of 1916, F rank in D ecem ber of 1918 and G lenn in N ovem ber of 1923. Eleven days a fte r F rank was born, “the y ear th e flu w as so bad,” Mr. K not- : tingham cam e hom e w ith the flu and pneum onia. A lthough no doctor cam e to the rem ote hom estead, the new born baby did n ’t catch the flu and, in tim e, Mr. K nottingham recovered from both diseases. T here was, of course, no school n e a r the K nottingham s and as j the children grew up it was nec essary to send them to W ashing ton to an a u n t’s hom e so they could attend school. In 1925 the K nottingham s m ov ed nearby to the O w yhee riv e r on one of the “shoestring ra n ches.” Tile cattle herd was grow ing and they kept some of th eir cattle on the hom estead. The new ranch was irrigated by w ater w heels from the O w yhee and they raised hay and turkeys in ad d i tion to the cattle. T he tu rk ey s w ere slaughtered on the ranch and trucked in to Nyssa for sale and shipm ent. Move to S unset Valley T hey lived on the O w yhee for 11 years but by th at tim e the dam had gone in and the b ackw ater from it flooded out the K n o ttin g h am ranch. T hey then m oved to S u n set V alley, still doing the sam e kind of farm ing, but w ith Jer.-ey cows by now, and they w ere m ilking the good ones. In O ctober of 1939 the K not- tingham 's fourth an d youngest son, Paul, was born. In the fall of 1945 Mr. K nottingham died. In Ja n u a ry of 1948 Mrs. Lois K nottingham m arried Owen Counsil and the couple still live in the S unset Valley com m unity. Mrs. C ounsil’s description of Nyssa some 44 years ago w hen she first arriv ed in this area was sum m ed up in the w ords “not very good.” It has, she says, changed a great deal in this time. N yssa’s changes for the b e tte r d u rin g the past half a century can largely be traced to hom e- | steaders and pioneers like Mrs. Counsil who overcam e the h a rd ships of those early days to build the area into a prosperous com m unity.
