Wilson re tu rn ed last week from the four-day, 13th annual convention of the Association for Supervision and C urreicluum De- velpom ent, a unit of the N ational E ducation Assoc., in Seattle. About 3,000 college and school superintendents, principals, d irec tors and teachers from all 48 states and U. S possessions a t tended the annual m eet, Wilson said. W ilson is a m em ber of a study group in the association on mo bilizing and using com m unity groups to im prove public educa tion. N yssa’s su p erin ten d en t said the general conclusions of the m eet ing w ere th at the A m erican p u b lic w ants a balanced educational program in th eir schools, especi ally in view of recent scientific developm ents such as the S p u t niks. The problem s and m eans of identifying students w ere also discussed, Wilson said, as w ere stu d en t problem s, com m unity re lations, the use of mass m edia for g etting inform ation to the public and the rising life expectance and problem s of all governm ent bodies. _ A fter the four-day session, W il son said th a t N yssa’s schools a p p ear to have an outstanding b al anced program of com pulsory and elective subjects fo r a sm all school system . Nyssans Donate Record Amount For Heart Fund Nyssans contributed a to tal of $406.63 in the 1958 H eart Fund drive conducted throughout the state during the m onth of F e b ru ary, Mrs. K. A. D anford, publicity chairm an for the local cam paign reported T uesday evening. This y e a r’s H eart contributions surpassed all previous drive rec ords for Nyssa during the past five years, according to Mrs. Dan- ford. W omen of the A m erican Legion A u x iliary and nurses from the M alheur M em orial hospital co o p erated in the H eart S unday door-to-door visitations and can vassing of the business district which resulted in a grand total of $329 88. T he plastic h ea rt can- nisters w hich w ere placed at v a r ious points throughout the dow n tow n area netted $6.75 and a do nation of $20 was received from the Emblem club. The Legion auxiliary was cred ited w ith collecting $231 73 and the N urses association w ith $98.- 15. A nother $50 was tallied from m iscellaneous contributions. An additional $77.35 w as col lected for the H eart fund in the A rcadia d istrict by m em bers of the A rcadia S unshine club: A record of additional d o n a tions received in envelopes w hich w ere m ailed to the local post office was not im m ediately av ail able this week, as m any had been fo rw arded to state headquarters, it w as explained. Dr. K. A. D anford has served as Nyssa H eart cam paign ch a ir m an and Mrs. D anford as its p u b licity chairm an for the past five consecutive years. Mrs. M yrtle Bee Hatch, 74, a resid en t of th e Big Bend com m un ity for th e past 61 years, died e a r ly W ednesday m orning at M al h e u r M em orial hospital. Mrs. H atch had assisted h er d au g h ter, I H elen H atch, as G ate C ity J o u r nal co rresp o n d en t for Big Bend , area for a nu m b er of years. She was born Dec. 30, 1883, in M innesota. Nyssa R ebekah lodge m em bers announced plans to show a film on cancer for public benefit at th eir n ex t m eeting, scheduled for T uesday, M arch 25. The special film w ill begin at 8:30 p.m. A r ran g em en ts w ere discussed at the re g u lar m eeting of the R ebekahs T uesday of this week at the IOOF hall. The public is invited to be at the h all to view the film on can cer and be guests of the R ebe kahs for coffee and cake to be served in the basem ent of the hall following. T here w ill be no charges o r requests for donations to the can cer fund at th at tim e, Mrs. T heron W’heeler, publicity ch airm an of the lodge, stated. Dog Ordinance Petition Given To City Council A petition bearing 179 sig n a tures and urging the city council to adopt an ordinance a n d /o r o th e r regulations providing for the prohibition and prevention of dogs running at large w ithin the corporate lim its of th e city was presented to the council at its re g u lar session T uesday night by C. K Olson. The council took the petition under advisem ent expressing the opinion th at they would probably w ant to re fer the m a tte r to the city ’s voters at the earliest op portunity. One councilm an also suggested th at the ballot proposal for the ordinance m ight specify and ask approval for the necessary tax levy to pay for its proper enforce m ent.
