Working Wives Are Needed A letter to the editor in this week’s Journal calling attention to “ unemployment at the height it is” and suggesting a boycott of firms employing married women, brings the need for closer scrutiny of the unemployment situation. Facts and statistics do not always agree and in this case facts dispel any theory that working women have caused an unemployment problem. In Nyssa several business firms were asked about working wives and it was revealed that in every case one or more women are employed as much to give as sistance to business firms as they are for the weekly pay check. That point was verified by several women them selves, in addition to their employers. An extreme case is a mother of four children who re tired from secretarial work several years ago, but was persuaded to return to her job “ temporarily” until a re placement could be located. In still another instance, a mother, whose husband is gainfully employed, is de voting several days a week to a job paying well above the minimum wage requirements, but which leaves her a net gain of about 35 cents an hour after extra exp enses and deductions punch holes in her pay check. She wants to be a full-time homemaker, but a replacement cannot be found. Similar situations exist throughout the community. Produce houses report that all the married women em ployed as sorters could not be replaced with men and unmarried women, retail stores are generally agreed “ they wouldn’t know where to look” if they were forced to choose from the ranks of unemployed men and single women. Oregon’s so-called unemployment rolls have an un canny means of growing when seasonal workers, both men and women, take temporary jobs and then become “ unemployed” when the work is terminated. Right now the logging industry is in the doldrums with many names on the list. Can you imagine a lumber jack taking dictation or serving as a sales manager in a woman’s ready-to-wear department? Unfortunately, there — many ng needing em_ ■piovmcnt who make applications for typing jobs, yet they have no knowledge of how to operate a typewriter; there are those who would like to teach school and have had no formal training and still others who aspire to highly skilled professions with no effort put forth to learn the work before asking for the job. The entire problem seems to point to some failure on the part of society to help prepare young people for versatile careers and the desire to learn. Our educational system cannot he blamed because society and public jrir icr. have not come up With liny proposal that might help balance the ever-present problem of where to find help when so many are u n e m p l o y e d . _______________ is Mrs. Earl Hastings’ father. Gate City Journal Nyssa, Oregon Dear Editor: With unemployment at the height it is, 35,000 to 45,000 in the state, it seems to me that it is ridiculous for so many men and women to be working at more than one job. I do not think both husband and wife should hold jobs and believe a business should be boycotted when it is learned that such persons are employed. Also, I believe that credit buy ing (easy payment plan) is detri mental to most people; too many would buy the moon, if they could charge it.
