Mrs. L uray T rab ert has been appointed lib rarian for the city of Nyssa. She succeeds Mrs. M ary Pruyn. . . . H. C hadderdon of C ali fornia has been issued a perm it to construct a building at Second street and Bower avenue to be used as a fu rn itu re store. . . . A plane piloted by Cecil Morrison, Jr., crashed into a field when M orrison w ith H ow ard Sm ith, Roy Pounds and M ervin Conery w ere startin g on a fishing trip to C ham berlain basin. The m en w ere not injured bu t th e plane, owned by Sam Horne, was badly dam aged. 15 Years Ago—July 30, 1942 R obert E. Long, who is w ith the wildlife service holds the all-tim e record for taking predatory a n i m als in the state of Oregon. He has caught 1028 coyotes. . . . B ar ney W ilson caught a 21-inch trout w eighing 33i pounds, Dr. E. D. N orcutt hooked a 22I-4-inch trout and B ernard Frost caught a 21 %- inch trout in the Owyhee riv er this week. . . . W ord has been received by the parents of Gene Brown, L aurence Findling, John Weeks, Ed O strum and M ickey O sburn th a t they had arrived at th eir new station “som ew here in A ustralia.” 20 Years Ago— July 29, 1937 F rank Byers has sold his red clover seed for $24.50 p er h u n dred w hich gave him a gross of $140 per acre. . . . T he Nyssa post office has been rem odeled and takes in the room occupied by the telephone com pany for m any years. All the old boxes have been m oved to a U -shaped space and m ore will be installed soon. . . . Mrs. F ran k Morgan, Ted and Clay, Mrs. J. J. Sarazin, M argaret. Ruby Ferguson takes the reader into E dw ardian E ngland in her novel, “For Every F avour,” in w hich Eddie Boan rises to head b u tler under a dignified pseudo nym , Edw ard Shrew sbury. “N ina" by Luise R inser is a novel set in the G erm any of the p ast 25 years, a love story of a forceful girl and a m an too high- m inded to act. “The Flying Y ears” is Lou Rei- chers’ account of his career w hich has included W orld W ar II du ty in the A ir Corps F errying Com m and, flying H arrim an on a lend- lease m ission to Moscow and an en d urance test to prove the feas ib ility of refueling in the air. “A T reasury of the Dog” is a collection of stories, essays, poems and quotations about dogs. “H andy G uide to W estern G er m any” by B ernd Boehle is a re fe r ence book for trav e l describing scenic, historic and artistic a ttra c tions from the Black forest to up p er B avaria and from the low er R hine to the N orth sea. “L ive Longer and Enjoy I t” by P eter S teincrohn is a readable key to physical and m ental health. “The M ystery W rite r’s H and book” is a study in the w riting, of detective, suspense, m ystery and crim e stories. “The Story of the ‘Old C olony’ of New P ly m o u th ” by Sam uel Eliot M orison describes the colo n y ’s history from its S ep aratist beginnings in E ngland to its in corporation in the M assachusetts Bay Colony in 1692. “D iscovering E m broidery” by W insom e Douglass describes a w ide v ariety of stitches, shows how to m ake one’s ow n designs and includes special techniques lie” by A lfred Tack is a guide to like q uilting and smocking. “How to Overcom e N ervous success an d ease in public speak T ension and Speak Well in Pub- ing. bush, bitten by a ra ttle r and lo cated the snake in a gum boot in a nearby shed. A Dodge car belonging to Ray C antrell s h a tte r ed the large plate glass window at the Nyssa R ealty office w hen C antrell cranked the car w hich had been left in gear and plunged forw ard com pletely destroying the window valued at $100. 35 Years Ago— July 28, 1922 Dr. Nixon has accepted a posi tion as instructor in a P o rtland dental college. He is negotiating w ith an o th er dentist to tak e over his practice here. . . . The pet w ildcat belonging to H enry Mc- Nee got loose from its chain S u n day evening and raided th e chick en house at the Trulock place. It was shot in the leg by Mrs. Ro berta Trulock. The cat was cap tured by its ow ner the next day. 40 Years Ago—July 27, 1917 Four of N yssa’s young men, A r chie Fields, John B. Smit, Otis H ow ard and David E. H aw kins w ere called to the colors in th e draft draw ing this week. . . . E. H. McDonald was in a train w reck near D urkee w hen re tu rn in g from a P resbyterian church m eeting at Eugene. . . . Ed Rich is digging a well and installing a pum ping plant on his five-acre trac t near town. P ow er is furnished by a distillate engine. . . . A runaw ay horse broke loose from the hitch- rack at the M ethodist church and dashed m adly down M ain street W ednesday evening, scattering pedestrians and causing a ripple of excitem ent. Sallee was a guest of Mrs. F ran k Morgan at her cabin at P ay ette L akes from Friday un til S unday last week. Mrs. Mor gan rem ain ed for an additional week. Dr. and Mrs. Robert Oldemeyer and two daughtei - of Longmont. Colo., and Mrs. Oldem ever’s par ents, Mr. an d Mrs Schlessinger of C olorado Springs, w ere house guests from S atu rd ay evening u n til M onday last week at the Don O ldem eyer home. They were en- ro u te to th e coast on vacation. Mr. and Mrs. Jam es Bleakney re tu rn ed to th eir home at Lake- view, Ore., S aturday week after a tw o w eeks’ visit at the home of Mrs. B leak n ey ’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. F. Savage Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Tobler, Mr. and Mrs. J im Elkins and Mr. El k in s’ m other, Mrs. Susan Elkins of P o rtlan d , spent Wednesday evening v isitin g at the Leonard N ew gen home. Vickie Hamilton, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bill Hamilton is con valescing at hom e after under going a tonsillectom y at M alheur M em orial hospital last week.
