Leaders C onference Scheduled T he dates and place for the a n nual 4-H leaders and agents con ference w ere announced by the state 4-H club office this week. The conference w ill be in C orval lis on Oregon S ta te college cam pus Jan . 22, 23 and 24 I realize these dates seem to be a long tim e from now but some of you 4-H leaders w ill probably like to know them so th at you can m ake plans to attend. All cubs and their p a r ents are urged to attend. W eekend T isiion at the A. H. Boydell home were Mr. and Mrs. Edw ard Boydell and fam ily of Boise. q uate housing and exhibit facili ties. The present 4-H dorm itory was built in 1923 to accom odate 275. This fall th ere w ere over 500 m em bers crow ded into the space designed for half th at many. And there are no housing and dining facilities for FFA members. A com m ittee from the S tate 4- H Leaders association has been w orking on this problem for the past year, and has some ten tativ e plans th at look good. As draw n up, the plans provide for suffic ient housing, dining space, and san itary facilities for all junior exhibitors, 4-H and FFA. and also provide for some additional exhibit space for non-livestock exhibits. The plan provides for using these facilities throughout the year for m eetings and conferences of non-profit organizations such as breed associations, Farm B u r eau. G ranges, etc. S upport for the proposed plans is being developed by com m ittees in the various counties over the state. Louis J. W ettstein of the Valley View com m unity is chair man of the com m ittee in M alheur county. Funds for building m ust come from the legislative appropriation, as it w ill be built on state-ow ned property. No local donations are being sought. But the need for the additional facilities are being explained to rural and civic orga nizations as a m eans of enlisting th eir support in obtaining legis lative action. A series of prom otion m eetings to explain the opportunities in 4- H Club work will be held during the n ext w eek or so These will be at schools, at public m eetings, and w ith interested groups. A large percentage of 4-H m em bers enrolled each y ear are first- y'ear m em bers, so this m ethod is being used to explain the various 4-H projects and activities. The first m eeting in this series was held at the Nyssa school Tuesday, w ith the fourth, fifth and sixth grades. S eparate m e e t ings w ere held to explain hom e economics projects to the girls and livestock projects and ac tiv i ties to the boys. Follow -up m eet ings w ill be held w ith interested groups to help them get their clubs organized.
