Perhaps you have already faced up to the sum m er-tim e an ti­
freeze problem . If you h av en ’t it is, qu ite frankly, tim e th at
you did.
A habit has grown up among motorists to leave their
"permanent typo” anti freeze in the radiator through sev­
eral winters and summers. Quite recent research on the
subject says that you shouldn't.
T here are tw o good reasons. F irst of all, th e ru st inhibitors
have m ore th an likely been consum ed th ro u g h th e w in ter and
w ithout the ru st inhibitors the an ti-freeze becomes a highly-
corrosive solution, especially to copper, brass and solder.
Secondly, ethylene glycol, which is the "permanent type”
anti-freeze, does not carry away heat as well as plain water.
This is fine in the winter tune, but in the summer it can
mean an over-hot engine.
An engine ru n n in g hot is mona liable to knock and ping.
Even if the tem p eratu re gauge doesn’t show it, the engine m ay
still be overheating at local trouble spots. This pin-point o v er­
heating, if it’s bad enough, can result in cracked blocks or
cracked cylinder heads.
I always hale writing these doom and-gloom columns,
the kind that promises dire consequences unless you do
something right away. But it’s simple enough to drain the
radiator and till it with plain water and rust inhibitor.
S um m er can be the tim e of driving fun it’s m ean t to be, but
it’s a tim e w hen you w an t a reliable car, a car th a t’s been
checked thoroughly by train ed m echanics, not ju st plum ped
dow n on a lot. You w ant a car th at will be fun, not m isery,
and the place to find it, of course, is over at o u r used car lot.
